Yoga in Singapore has grown into a flourishing and diverse community, offering a plethora of opportunities for individuals seeking physical and mental well-being. From bustling urban centres to serene outdoor spaces, Singapore’s many beautiful spaces complement the practice of yoga. In this cosmopolitan city-state, one can find a wide array of yoga styles catering to practitioners of all levels.

Traditional styles like Hatha and Ashtanga, as well as contemporary approaches like Vinyasa and Hot Yoga, are embraced within the local yoga scene. The availability of various styles ensures that there's something for everyone, whether you're a seasoned yogi or a novice looking to embark on a wellness journey. Yoga studios dot the city, each offering a unique ambience, a staff of knowledgeable teachers, and a chance to delve into the practice amidst like-minded individuals.

These studios often provide a haven for those seeking respite from the fast-paced urban lifestyle, allowing practitioners to immerse themselves in the calming and meditative aspects of yoga.

For those who prefer the great outdoors, Singapore's green spaces are perfect for outdoor yoga classes. Parks and scenic locations provide an idyllic setting for yoga enthusiasts to connect with nature while engaging in their practice, whether attending a studio class or going solo. The city's commitment to a healthy and active lifestyle is reflected in the availability of yoga classes in gyms, wellness centres, and even workplaces, making it convenient for individuals to incorporate yoga into their daily routines.

Beyond the physical practice, Singapore's yoga community extends its embrace to wellness events, festivals, and retreats. These gatherings offer opportunities for practitioners to deepen their understanding of yoga, learn from experienced instructors, and connect with a supportive and like-minded community. Becoming a part of the local yoga community can be fun and fulfilling; a great way to meet new people and make new friends!

In a digital age, the accessibility of yoga has expanded through virtual classes and online platforms. This allows individuals to practice yoga in the comfort of their homes or locations of choice, providing flexibility for those with busy schedules or those who prefer a more private setting.

What to Consider When Choosing a Yoga Studio

Choosing a yoga studio is a low-stakes game, meaning that even if you end up going somewhere that isn’t quite your vibe, you should still be able to have a nice time in class. So, don’t feel too much pressure about which studio(s) to check out!

Everyone has their preferences when it comes to location, interior style, studio customs, teachers and teaching style, styles of yoga, fellow yogi students, etc. You won’t know which studio you feel most at home in unless you test a few out. And, you can attend more than one studio if there are classes in multiple places that you like!

When scoping out studios, there are a few factors you may want to consider.

Location

A studio closer to you will be more convenient than one on the other side of the city. If this is an important factor for you, keep it in mind as you research studios.

Type of Yoga Offered

There are dozens of styles of yoga as well as interpretations of those styles that differ between teachers and yoga-teaching schools. Research the types of yoga offered at the studios near you so you can choose a class appropriate for your level, needs, and wants.

Teachers

Every teacher has their signature teaching style, and not every teacher clicks with every student. That’s okay! Try out different classes at different studios with different teachers to see if there is at least one local yoga instructor who teaches in a way that speaks to you. When you take their class, the cues and instructions make more sense, you feel more confident, and your yoga practice flourishes.

Different Types of Yoga

There are dozens of different styles of yoga, and each yoga instructor approaches teaching in a unique way. Explore different classes and studios to find yoga teachers who resonate with you!

Philosophy

For many people these days, the extensive philosophical background of yoga is not as important as the postures (asana). If you want a simple exercise, you might not be interested in a class, studio, or teacher who is more into spirituality and the Eight Limbs of Yoga.

Conversely, if you’re interested in learning more about the history and philosophy of yoga, then you will want to seek a studio, yoga style, and teacher who incorporates those things into the classes.

Cost and Cancellation Policy

The cost of classes at yoga studios varies due to many factors. Cheap classes don’t necessarily mean worse classes, and more expensive ones don’t always mean a better class. Weigh the offerings and your impression of the studio and teachers against your budget.

It’s also important to note the financial policies of the studio. If you are someone who often has last-minute changes to their schedule due to work or other obligations, a studio with free cancellation is important!

Trial Period

Many studios offer a free class, a free week, or a deeply discounted rate for new students so they can check out the studio before investing a lot of money on a full-price class or membership.

This is the perfect way to get a feel for the commute to the studio, the vibe of the employees, the types of classes they offer, and more!

Other Options for Yoga Classes in Singapore

Aside from attending a formal studio, many yoga students find that private classes with a qualified instructor are a great way to learn more about the practice of yoga, deepening their yoga poses, and learning more about their own body and mind. Many yoga teachers offer virtual classes perfect for practising yoga in any location!

To reap the benefits of yoga in a non-studio setting, you can seek out a professional yoga teacher for in-person or online classes on Superprof!
