Why is it important to study history?

Studying history is important because it helps us learn how we came to be and how our society has been shaped over time. By learning about the triumphs and struggles of those who came before us, we gain a broader perspective on our own place in the world - check out the works of famous historians like Thucydides, Herodotus and Edward Gibbon.

In historian Patrick Allitt's TEDx talk "Why History Matters", he emphasises why understanding history helps us gain insights into modern issues and make sound decisions for the future. He argues that historical knowledge puts current events into perspective, revealing patterns and consequences of past actions.

Studying history is vital because it helps us understand how Singapore transformed from a small trading port into a modern, global city. For Singaporeans, history is not just about the past. It is about identity, resilience, and lessons for the future.

By looking back at events such as Sir Stamford Raffles’ arrival in 1819, the Japanese Occupation during World War II, and Singapore’s independence in 1965, we gain a better understanding of the struggles and sacrifices that shaped the nation. These stories remind us that Singapore’s success did not come overnight but through hard work, unity, and determination.

History also helps us value Singapore’s unique multicultural fabric. The journeys of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian communities, along with newer immigrants, reflect how diversity has always been central to the nation’s growth. Learning about these roots builds empathy and strengthens the spirit of harmony that Singapore is known for today.

Most importantly, history teaches resilience. Past challenges - whether war, poverty, or political uncertainty - demonstrate that Singapore overcame difficulties through perseverance and collective effort. Younger Singaporeans can therefore draw inspiration from the past to build a stronger, united, and forward-looking nation.

While Fort Canning's tree tunnel is known as a popular spot for capturing photos, it is also a glimpse into the past. The hill it is on housed Singapore's largest underground military operations complex in 1942. Photo by Darren Halos on Pexels.

How to effectively improve your history skills

Expanding your knowledge of history can be a rewarding experience, especially with the wealth of resources available for every level.

A great place to start is by delving into comprehensive history books that cover broad periods and significant events. For a readable introduction to world history, consider books like "A Little History of the World" by E.H. Gombrich or "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari. These books offer engaging narratives that span across civilisations and epochs, providing a broad understanding of human history.

Engaging with primary sources such as historical documents, letters, and artefacts can offer a deeper understanding of the context and perspectives of the time. Singapore is home to numerous world-class museums and historical sites, including the National Museum of Singapore, The Battlebox, and Fort Siloso, where you can immerse yourself in the country's rich past.

If you prefer personalised guidance and structured learning, consider private tutoring through Superprof Singapore.
