About Josiah
I am a UBC Commerce student with a strong background in STEM, leadership, and teaching. As a past senior army cadet instructor and platoon commander, I have also developed the discipline, preparation skills, and communication needed to aid my students succeed in their fields. I believe that learning should be structured yet engaging, and I strive to create a supportive environment where students feel confident asking questions and challenging themselves without fear of a bad grade. I have many years of experience teaching youth in academic and extracurricular settings as I have tutored and coached many children. I am also very committed to helping each student reach their full potential, teaching them about the importance of patience and understanding in everything they do.

My Approach as a Tutor
As a tutor, I focus on ensuring that my students understand the curriculum rather than memorization. Due to experience, I understand that an understanding of the subject will have greater applications than memorizing the book terms of subjects. My tutoring method combines structured lessons with interactive explanations to keep students engaged and make sure that they fully understand the subject. I use clear step-by-step approaches, breaking down complex concepts into simple, understandable parts, and applying them through targeted practice questions to build confidence. Every student learns differently, therefore keeping a flexible style of teaching is of utmost importance to me.
Typical Lesson Plan
A typical lesson begins with a quick review of previous material to reinforce understanding. Then, I introduce the new topic by explaining key concepts with relatable examples usually followed by guided practice questions. Finally, I assign structured practice and provide a short summary of what we covered to ensure students leave the lesson confident and ready to review independently.
What Sets Me Apart
I am able to connect with students, especially younger children, in a way that keeps them engaged while maintaining a disciplined and structured learning environment. I also bring patience, mentorship, and motivation into my teaching as they are key aspects for a student to learn and grow in their respected subjects. I strongly believe anyone can understand any subject with discipline, the right guidance, and preparation.

My lessons are designed for K-11 students, particularly those taking high school math and chemistry. Whether they are looking to improve their foundational understanding, prepare for tests, or gain confidence in STEM subjects, I am committed to helping them achieve their goals through structured and engaging sessions.
