About Alex

Alex grew up in the Near North neighborhood of Minneapolis (same neighborhood as Prince, but not the same time), where his first memories of music involved a room full of Legos, alternative rock radio, and hip hop and neo-soul grooves floating from open windows. His musical passions led him to McNally Smith College of Music for a bachelor’s degree, Musikhochschule Luebeck in Germany as a classical exchange student, and currently Boston’s Berklee College of Music. These opportunities have allowed him to study contemporary, jazz, and classical music with an all-star list of musicians from all over the world. Alex has contributed his skills to original and cover bands, charities, live broadcasts, megachurches, recording sessions, national orchestras, weddings, and corporate events and currently teaches private lessons at the business he founded, Rockwell Guitar School. When he isn’t playing or teaching, he loves to grill, read, travel, and spend time with his family.

I've heard horror stories of teachers bragging or showing off for the entire lesson-- that's not me. My goal is to get you started on your goals in your first lesson. What you get as a student:

>>30,000 Lesson Experience
I’ve taught over 30,000 private lessons, to all walks of life. I’ve had enough teaching practice to know what works and what doesn’t. I can teach you the right things in the right order, with the structure and accountability that you can’t get with YouTube or video library lessons.

>>A Proprietary Method
You’re not going to get a teacher who just reads someone else’s guitar book to you. We’ve created our own method distilled from the best schools, authors, players, and the breadth of our 30,000 lesson experience. This method has been battle tested with real students and is being updated as new information becomes available.

>>High Fidelity, Musician Optimized Zoom meetings
We’re not going to just read a powerpoint to you. Our zoom meetings utilize hi-fi audio, screen sharing for sheet music, multimedia examples, and multi camera angles.

>>Jam On The Internet
We are set up to jam and play together live across a high speed internet connection.

>>Online Payment, Scheduling, and Reminders
Students can manage their appointments and payments through our online system, and get text and email reminders before lessons. No more emailing your teacher back and forth, no more miscommunications, no more missed lessons or wasted time.

In your first lesson(s) I will:
- ask a lot of questions to get to know you
- do a baseline evaluation on your current skills so we can accurately discuss timelines and goals
- start working on your goals right away, NOT teach you London Bridge :)
- I've taught all ages 4-84, all aspirations (bedroom rocker, campfire rock star, professional musician)
- all lessons and plans are customized for each student
- I use tested and proven teaching methods for strumming, theory, improvisation, modern styles and music reading

My superpowers that you will benefit from as a student:

Luthier's Apprentice: I have been building, repairing, and modifying electric and acoustic guitars for almost 20 years. There is so much snake oil in guitar product marketing that I can help you navigate the good & bad with firsthand experience.

Electronic Engineering degree: If you come from a very type A, scientific and analytical background, the average artist will make you want to rip your hair out. I have learned from and achieved a level of competency in a type A, scientific, and analytical field and I know how to communicate with you to reach your goals.

Extensive formal and self taught music education:
Bachelor's degree, Berklee College of Music: In progress
Bachelor's degree, McNally Smith College: completed 2010
Musikhochschule Luebeck (German classical school): exchange student
My teachers have studied and taught at Berklee, Juilliard, U of North Texas, MI, New England Conservatory, NYU, U of Miami Frost, Yale, and Manhattan School of Music, among many others.
I've logged countless hours teaching myself too! I'm a music book fanatic harnessing the full power of the internet.

Professional Private Teacher: Since 2008 I've owned and operated my own business teaching private lessons. I've accumulated over 30,000 lessons taught to probably thousands of students (I stopped counting awhile ago).

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I grew up in the Near North neighborhood of Minneapolis (same neighborhood as Prince, but not the same time), where my first memories of music involved a room full of Legos, alternative rock radio, and hip hop and neo-soul grooves floating from open windows. I was young enough that I was still playing with Legos (mostly the Technics series), and while I played I would listen to the radio. I soon tried alternative rock radio because my friends were talking about it because their older siblings were listening to it. This was the 90s, so I was hearing bands like early Offspring, Collective Soul, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Weezer, Alice In Chains, Green Day, Soundgarden, Counting Crows, and of course Metallica, Megadeth, and Ozzy, among many other things. That was my happy place. At the same time, living in the inner city I was also exposed to tons of hip hop, neo-soul, and R&B. My family also has a lot of Latinx influence so I was hearing salsa, son, cumbia, and charanga music as well. The first album I purchased with my own money was Green Day Dookie, I remember standing at target trying to decide between that and Michael Jackson's Dangerous album. I started playing guitar to learn that Green Day album, and soon was hooked-- started getting guitar magazines with lessons and transcriptions, picking apart songs with a CD player and a phrase sampler to slow things down.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

This has kind of changed for me over the years-- in the early days I could listen to bombastic instrumental guitar music endlessly-- things like Vai, Satriani, hard rock like Ozzy, and that stuff is still musically amazing but after a while it gets exhausting now that I've studied so much music and trained my ears to the hilt. That stuff is like sugar-- tastes great but after awhile I crash and get saturated. Now for marathon listening I prefer things like Miles Davis, tame Bill Frisell, acoustic Al Di Meola, which are still musically rich but not as aggressive.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Ear training or improvising. Ear training is difficult because it can seem so abstract at first: "You want me to identify a note out of thin air?" And truth be told there is a lot of bad ear training advice out there. But I love ear training, I love teaching it, I love using it, and have become quite good at it despite having been born with a mild to moderate hearing loss.

Improvising is inherently easy. One could pick random notes with zero knowledge and correctly call it improvising. However, improving your improvising and becoming a skilled improviser with creativity, precision, and control is difficult. Improvising is the culmination and synthesis of all your musical skills, and it's fun and beautiful when done well.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think guitar is difficult because it can have up to six different places for the same concert pitch. I tell former or current piano players that a guitar is like having six pianos in front of you (each string is basically a piano). French horn is difficult because it has 3 or 4 valves for all the notes it needs to play.
  • What are your keys to success?

Persistence trumps talent. Show up, ask questions, practice, enjoy the journey. Be the kind of person people love to help. Take things slow at first. Also water, sunshine, rest, exercise, nutrition. Always be learning.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would love to have a pint with Guthrie Govan because he such a guitar wizard. Jacob Collier is a newer favorite of mine, he's just a wellspring of creativity, knowledge, and enthusiasm. I would love to pick Chet Atkins' brain if he was still around- also a guitar wizard but savvy music businessman as well.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Never turn down an opportunity to meet with someone or make a new friend- network your butt off. Music school is important but not everything, and you need to go out in the real world and challenge yourself.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

My first priority is to listen to and understand my students as individuals, and to keep music fun and playful for them while creating an environment to learn and discover things for themselves. I also have a wide variety of extra experience that compliments music well. For example: I have a degree in electronic engineering which gave me awesome analytical and troubleshooting skills. Often times I think of myself as engineering better musicians. I'm a savvy entrepreneur who has started several businesses in the face of adversity. I'm a voracious reader- at least 120 books a year. I'm well traveled (my wife is a flight attendant) and a lifelong learner. I've served as an apprentice luthier which has given me great insight into how guitars work and even greater discernment when it comes to music marketing and advice.
