My sessions focus on exploring strategies that my students can then apply to their personal practice, as the UCAT is a skills-based exam. The structure of my sessions can be summarised as follows:

1) We’ll start our session by discussing where you are at currently with a subtest. What's been working for you? What hasn't? This allows me to tailor the rest of the session to your needs.

2) I’ll explain a few strategies relevant to the subtest. As different people prefer different strategies, we will cover ones that a majority of my tutees and peers have found useful.

3) Then, we’ll work through some questions together. I’ll ask you to verbalise your thought processes as you solve the question, as the method you use to reach the answer will affect your accuracy and timing.

4) At the end of each session, we’ll end with a review of what we’ve learned. At the end of each lesson, I email students notes which summarise the strategies discussed in the session, that they can reference in their own practice.

In our sessions, I will equip you with the strategies to most effectively practice in your own time, and to solve UCAT questions in the exam. Most students take around 10 hours to cover all 4 subtests.

If you are interested, please feel free to message me to arrange a first lesson, or ask any questions! :)

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I didn't choose the UCAT; the UCAT chose me!

I wanted to pursue a career in medicine, due to my interest in connecting with people, working in teams, and using scientific and technological innovations to improve people's quality of life. A UCAT score is a component that is required for entry into undergraduate medicine in Australia. It is often weighted just as heavily as your high school grades, and the medical school interview.

The UCAT is an exam that assesses skills in areas and ways that are not covered in school. Therefore, it was a pretty confusing process, as I had to find ways to learn about the exam on my own. I was helped by external tutoring academies, online preparation platforms, and one-on-one tutoring.

I now strive to help other students find a clearer and easier pathway to medicine, using my lived experience, and experience as a private tutor.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

The UCAT consists of 5 subtests, each testing a different skill, using a unique style of questions.

I feel confident in tutoring all five subtests of the UCAT. I will explain how to identify each of the unique question types; once you know what sort of question it is, you will also know how to tackle it!

I have the least tips and tricks for Quantitative Reasoning. To me, it seems like a subtest that you will improve linearly in, with practice.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In high school, I didn't have a good idea of what the UCAT actually was, nor the actual process of applying for medical school. Not knowing what I really needed to do meant that I was unnecessarily stressed.

Talking to mentors who had gone through the process themselves helped me realize what I actually needed to do; once I had the knowledge, I was able to stride towards my goals confidently. I really appreciate the mentoring I received from my tutors and mentors, and they inspired me to support others on their journey to medicine.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Two qualities I constantly strive to work on are: a good teaching attitude that creates a comfortable atmosphere, where students feel empowered to state what they want to learn, and confident to ask questions; a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the topic, to be able to assist the student in whatever area they want guidance in.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Abstract Reasoning (AR) was the subtest that I could not improve in. While my percentiles in my other subtests were gradually improving, my AR percentile stayed around 60%, even though I was spending a lot of time practicing this subtest.

A few months prior to sitting my UCAT exam, I happened to stumble across the technique of 'comparing the two most simple squares'. The reasoning behind the technique made sense, so I tried applying the technique in my practice. After trying a new strategy, I finally started seeing improvements in my percentile.

That strategy was like a miracle for me, because AR ended up being my best subtest on test day. At 880/900, my AR subtest score ended up boosting my entire UCAT score.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

It is definitely difficult to decide between Very Appropriate or Appropriate in Situational Judgement (SJ)… Even after getting into medical school and attending several medical ethics lectures, I still can't get every question completely correct!

Luckily, SJ does not contribute to your UCAT score, so is not a major criteria that medical universities consider.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

One of my greatest passions is reading and writing! My favourite books are A Little Life (Hanya Yanagihara), Little Women (Louisa May Alcott), and The Song of Achilles (Madelline Miller). In addition to gaining medical knowledge and skills, I am always working on my creative writing skills.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I always try to match my student's energy and enthusiasm, and I am genuinely excited to help them become amazing health practitioners!
