About Usman

As you will see from my attached CV, I hold a degree in Biological Sciences. Thirteen years ago, on the day of my graduation, I was offered a position at my current school. I took up the opportunity to become a Science teacher for lower secondary students in a school following the British national curriculum. I then progressed to teaching IGCSE and A levels in the same school. These last thirteen years have certainly been a journey where I have learnt a lot and developed a real passion for teaching. In my first two years of teaching, I was learning the ropes and conducting classes in the same way I had been taught during my own education. I tended to be very authoritarian in my approach to discipline and stuck to the textbook and past exam papers to follow the curriculum, using only questions and answers to assess progress. At that time, I understood the importance of clarity in concepts, so I would use animations and flow charts to describe events or processes. However, I realised this routine was very restricting and rarely allowed me to share my passion for my subject. I also felt that the learners in my classes needed more stimulation. I asked myself, "What could I do?" Initially, I found myself observing some UK-trained colleagues in the school. I noticed how they were employing different approaches. This led me to start investigating and researching different methods to make my lessons more engaging. I started seeking their advice and guidance. With slight improvisation and help from online resources such as TES, I felt that my students were enjoying the lessons more than before and with greater anticipation. I discovered STEM activities related to various concepts in Science, such as making a rubber band cart, water rocket, mini hydroponic culture, and similar engaging activities covering broader areas of science. I researched different AFL (Assessment for Learning) resources aimed at KS3 learners following the UK curriculum. I also attended CIE training for active learning, differentiation, and metacognition. I signed up for STEM organisations for inspiration. This led to a greater interest in learning more about teaching, and my focus shifted to equipping myself with skills that are optimal for my students as well as for myself. I felt more responsible for the success of my students. My frequently used technique is engineering questions to lead them towards lesson objectives. Students are very responsive to questions. I often start with a carefully planned question and then use their answers for discussion, leading them forward to the next objective. I make sure that everyone participates by using the popsicle technique. To encourage students, I ask them to respond by starting their sentence with "I am going to take a risk," followed by their response. Assessment for learning is a key classroom practice. It's intuitive for any teacher to assess students' progress. In my early teaching career, I did not use AFL more effectively than I am using it now. I have realised that formative assessment is the process of learning and not the product. It is more about quality assurance than quality control. My strategies for assessment for learning are as ,asking carefully constructed questions, using traffic signs ,using colour-coded YES or NO cards, displaying MCQs and asking students to show the options laminated with letters (A, B, C, D, E) Conducting a five-minute quiz at the end or at the start using Google Forms, Kahoot, Quizlet, and Flubaroo for quizzes and quick assessments and employing hinge-point questions to assess the general progress of my class and redirecting my lesson depending upon the need. As a result of employing these strategies, students enjoyed revision sessions more, and these sessions were far more productive and motivating. My students, after initially being resistant to stepping out of their comfort zone, became more excited and saw the learning benefits. It also stretched my organisational skills and creativity, as preparation was needed to find resources in place with limited resources. This approach rekindled my passion for my subjects and made me realise that I was in the right profession. In June 2018, I was moved into KS4 and 5. I had been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. Teaching exam groups with these strategies is challenging because you have to finish the course within a stipulated time. I took up the challenge, and I must say I am loving it. It gives you a new dimension and freedom to work at an advanced level. Together, we planned and worked on community-based conservation programmes such as a campaign against idling cars in parking lots or at traffic signals, and making artwork out of household plastic waste. We have collaborated with a molecular biology lab for interesting sessions on Molecular biology. Projects such as a Biogas plant and a Sustainable hydroponic garden at our school are planned and will hopefully be executed in the future. I am applying for this job for the next part of my journey. I have found that I have a flair for teaching, and I want to further my skills and knowledge and share experiences with a wider range of colleagues. The world of teaching and learning is changing rapidly, and I want to evolve along with it to equip myself with the latest cutting-edge tools and strategies, including employing AI and experiments on virtual or robotic organisms to study different life processes I am self-motivated and have pursued going on courses and discovering different ways of doing things with little support.
