About Amanda
Amanda – Supportive and Experienced Tutor in History, Philosophy & Religious Studies
Helping students grow in confidence, think deeply, and achieve their academic goals
I’ve been teaching History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies for over 20 years, working with students from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. I currently teach IGCSE and A Level and specialise in supporting home-schooled and distance-learning students. My lessons are structured, friendly, and highly focused on building confidence, deepening understanding, and helping students develop the skills they need to succeed.
I offer regular lessons with detailed marking and feedback, help with UCAS applications, and provide references where needed. I also work closely with families to offer ongoing support and keep everyone updated on progress and next steps.
Throughout my career, I’ve taught at some of the UK’s top sixth form colleges and served as Head of Department and Head of Humanities. I’m also a senior examiner for A Level Philosophy, History, and Religious Studies, which means I can offer valuable, up-to-date insight into what examiners are really looking for.
In addition to GCSE, A Level, and university-level tuition, I help students prepare for:
School entrance exams (11+, 13+, 16+, and admissions tests)
Oxbridge and UCAS applications, including interview practice
Specialist admissions tests such as the TSA, HAT, BMAT, and LNAT
International essay competitions, including the John Locke Essay Competition and the Trinity College Cambridge prizes in History and Philosophy
I also have extensive experience working with students managing challenges such as illness, anxiety, and dyslexia, as well as those aiming for the very highest grades and competitive university places.
Since 2008, I’ve worked as lead course developer for A Level Philosophy and Religious Studies and IGCSE History at the National Extension College (NEC), where I’ve written and updated textbooks and learning materials through several specification changes. My resources have been recognised by Edexcel and published by Hodder Education, including Philosophy of Religion and Ethics for the Edexcel A Level.
I’m also a published author of:
Two revision guides for Religious Studies
Two biographies on Aristotle and Hannah Arendt
Articles on A Level History exam technique
I love working with students of all ages—from GCSE to degree level and adult learners.
I believe that tutoring works best when it’s a genuine partnership. I always start with a short, informal meeting with students and parents to explore their goals and make sure we’re the right fit. I aim to create a supportive, open, and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions, challenge themselves, and enjoy learning.

I offer one-hour, student-focused online lessons for learners at GCSE, A Level, and university level, as well as those preparing for school entrance exams (11+, 13+, 16+) and UCAS applications. I also support home-schooled students, helping them stay on track with structured lessons, regular feedback, and clear guidance.
Lessons are interactive and designed to keep students actively involved through discussion, critical thinking, and tailored activities. Whether it’s creative writing, academic writing, or subject-specific support in History, Philosophy, or Religious Studies, each session is built around the student’s needs and goals.
Sessions take place via Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet, and are always informed by the latest exam board specifications and examiner feedback—so students know exactly what is expected and how to succeed.

Perfect! Amanda worked with my son during his first year A-level philosophy . He got a B during his mock exam in May but with extra work and preparation during the summer, he was able to pull it up to an A in October before applying to Univeristies. She is very patient and knowledgeable in the subject. She was able to challenge my son and unlock his full potential .
During his second year , he still gets in touch with Amanda from time to time but only when needed, As She has given him great skills to be more independent.Perfect! Amanda has been an excellent tutor for my daughter. She has increased her confidence and made her believe she can do it! Plugging gaps of areas she was insecure in and disappointingly, not taught in school we only wish we had found Amanda earlier . We would wholeheartedly recommend . Thank you Amanda
Perfect! Amanda explained things simply and clearly for my son, he has found this extremely helpful for his upcoming GCSE Religious Studies exam. I would definitely recommend Amanda.

Perfect! Amanda helped to my child with preparation for History GCSE exam. She is very knowledgeable and provides the structure one needs in preparing for GCSE. Few lessons + homework practices with Amanda helped my child to catch up on important topics and gave confidence in the ability to continue self-preparation for the exam

- Amanda's response :
Perfect! Good listener, firm but accommodating, teaches student how stick / focus on question at hand. Very patient with a slower type of student. All these have resulted in great transformation and heightened / developed focus and interest in David attitude to his work and good results. Thanks Amanda
- Amanda's response :
Perfect! Highly recommended
Amanda helped my son prepare for his History A Level, and it has been fantastic to see how much his confidence and enjoyment of history has grown with her patient guidance. When starting with Amanda he was still uncomfortable with the demands of A-level history, and especially on how to write a good essay. She quickly gave him the tools and skills he didn't seem to be getting from school, and it was a joy to see his enthusiasm grow with his improving results. He really looked forward to his sessions with her. He was predicted a C. He got an A. We are both certain that would not have happened without Amanda. Many thanks!

After having a couple of bad experiences with other tutors it was a joy to find Amanda. My daughter gained both confidence and knowledge in her History subjects. The confidence boost also helped with her other A level subjects.
