  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in social work began long before I qualified in 2006. I have always been passionate about advocating for social justice, supporting vulnerable individuals, and empowering communities. As my career progressed, I naturally transitioned into practice education, mentoring and guiding students in their journey to becoming competent social workers. As a full-time social work lecturer, private tutoring emerged as a way to offer more personalised support to students who needed additional guidance in developing their skills, knowledge, and confidence. My area of expertise is around placements and anti discriminatory practice and proofing assignments
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)

I teach social work, with a focus on practice education, placements, ethics, law, safeguarding, and reflective practice. I enjoy discussing real-life case studies, ethical dilemmas, and critical thinking approaches, as these help students bridge the gap between theory and practice. One of the more challenging areas for students (and sometimes for me) is navigating complex policies and legislation, as they can be dense and ever-changing. However, I strive to break these down into digestible, practical applications.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, during my training, I had a practice educator who was both challenging and supportive. They encouraged me to reflect critically on my practice, which has stayed with me throughout my career. Their approach to supervision, combining high expectations with genuine care, has influenced how I mentor and tutor students today. Additionally, the first team manager helped me become an excellent team and service manager who provides supportive supervision.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be patient, adaptable, and encouraging. In social work, in particular, it's essential to exude critical thinking, self-awareness, and resilience. The ability to simplify complex concepts while maintaining depth is crucial, as is providing constructive feedback that helps students grow in confidence and competence. Honesty is the best policy.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my most rewarding experiences was working with a student who struggled with reflective writing and self-confidence. They felt overwhelmed by the demands of practice placement. Through consistent tutoring, helping them break down experiences, and applying theory, they not only improved academically but also became a more self-assured practitioner. Seeing them successfully qualify and later become a practice educator themselves was incredibly fulfilling. I also helped with their ASYE application and interview preparation, which led to a successful job offer.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Social work is emotionally demanding, and one of the biggest challenges is maintaining personal resilience while supporting others. Staying up to date with ever-evolving policies and ensuring students are prepared for the realities of frontline practice can also be demanding. However, these challenges are what make the profession dynamic and continually push me to grow. Keeping up with CPD is important
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in practice education-helping the next generation of social workers develop the confidence and skills to make a real impact. I also have a strong interest in reflective practice, as I believe it is the foundation for ethical and effective social work. Outside of teaching, I enjoy research and staying engaged with policy development as well as travelling and taking care of my family.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions

I bring nearly two decades of experience in social work, a deep understanding of practice education, and a commitment to student success. My approach is student-centred, blending academic knowledge with real-world application. I tailor my tutoring to individual needs, ensuring students feel supported and challenged in equal measure. Ultimately, my goal is to help students not just pass their courses but to become compassionate, competent, and reflective practitioners.
