• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I developed an interest in mathematics from a young age, thanks to its logical structure and problem-solving nature. I enjoyed the challenge it presented and found satisfaction in uncovering solutions. My interest in private tutoring grew during my late high school years when I started helping classmates in math. I discovered that I not only enjoyed teaching but also found it incredibly rewarding to see others grasp concepts and succeed.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I teach a variety of math topics, from basic arithmetic to advanced calculus. I particularly enjoy exploring algebra and calculus with students, as these areas involve critical thinking and problem-solving that can be very rewarding. Algebra's logical structure and calculus's application to real-world problems are both fascinating. On the flip side, I find probability a bit less engaging, though I recognize its importance and strive to make it as interesting and applicable as possible for students.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  One of my major role models is Richard Feynman, the renowned physicist known for his work in quantum mechanics and his remarkable ability to communicate complex scientific ideas. Feynman's curiosity, unconventional approach to problem-solving, and his talent for making intricate concepts accessible through engaging storytelling had a profound impact on me. His enthusiasm for both discovering new knowledge and sharing it with others inspired me to delve deeper into physics (outside of tutoring) and to approach teaching mathematics with a similar passion for clarity and creativity.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  A good tutor needs patience, empathy, and strong communication skills. It's important to be able to explain concepts in different ways and adapt to each student's learning style. Being approachable and encouraging helps build confidence in students. Additionally, having a deep understanding of the subject matter and being able to relate it to real-world applications can make learning more engaging and meaningful.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  One memorable moment involved a Year 9 student named Sarah, who had been struggling with algebra, particularly with quadratic equations. She found the concept abstract and disconnected from her everyday experiences, which made it difficult for her to grasp. During one of our sessions, I decided to approach the topic differently. I knew Sarah was passionate about baking, so I used this interest to create a practical example. We talked about a scenario where she needed to design a rectangular cake with a specific area for a family celebration. I explained that if she wanted the cake to have a certain area and knew the length of one side, she could use algebra to figure out the length of the other side. We set up a problem where the length of the cake was x and the width needed to be determined. The area of the cake, which she wanted to be 100 square cms, gave us the equation: x * width = 100 After some manipulations, it turned into a quadratic equation when we substituted various values for the width. We then used factoring to find the possible dimensions for the cake. Sarah was initially skeptical, but as we worked through the problem, she saw how algebra was used to solve a real-life situation. When Sarah finally understood how to apply the quadratic formula to find the dimensions that fit her criteria, her excitement was palpable. She even started coming up with her own baking-related math problems. This breakthrough not only helped her understand quadratic equations better but also built her confidence. Seeing her light up with enthusiasm and apply what she learned in a context she cared about was incredibly rewarding. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of connecting academic concepts to students' interests. It made the learning process more engaging and showed Sarah how algebra could be useful in her everyday life.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

  One of the challenges I've encountered as a private tutor is adapting to the rapid advancements in educational technology and resources. New tools and platforms are constantly emerging, and staying updated with these innovations while integrating them effectively into my teaching can be demanding. Additionally, addressing the varying paces at which students grasp concepts requires continuous adjustment of lesson plans and strategies. Balancing the need to incorporate new methods with the importance of reinforcing fundamental skills is an ongoing challenge, but it's essential for providing the most effective support to each student.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My particular passion is teaching and helping students build confidence in their mathematical abilities. While I do enjoy various aspects of mathematics, my greatest passion lies in making complex concepts understandable and accessible. Seeing students develop a love for math and achieve their academic goals is incredibly fulfilling.
