About Matty

3 years as a BA English and Art History student (first-class honours), a first-class MA achieved in Medieval and Renaissance English, 3 years of study towards a PhD in warrior women in Old English and Old Norse literature, and several years' experience as a postgrad tutor and seminar leader for the School of English in UCC. That is the expertise I bring to the table. On a less self-glamorizing note, I love trees, writing poetry about nature and old gods, and singing to my son.

Whether you are prepping for your Junior or Leaving Cert exams, struggling at college level, or in need of help with your spoken English, contacting me would be a great way to start progressing. I can help you develop your writing skills so that your prose is dynamic, detailed, and deft. I can help you "gut a text" for the author's subtle messages and maneuvers. I can help you write a story that ensnares the senses and entangles the emotions. I can help you present yourself and your ideas with charisma and clarity. I believe that ignorance is an opportunity for growth, not a value judgment. If you believe that you need my help, then get in touch and we can get stuck in :)

Find out more about Matty

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

While in university I gravitated towards medieval literature, Old English and Old Norse especially, which I believe stemmed from my childhood fascination with Tolkien's Middle Earth. I was offered the opportunity to tutor undergraduate classes as a PhD student from 2017-2020 and I found teaching to be extremely satisfying.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

The main area I help people with is the improvement of general writing skills, be that finding a better flow to one's writing or ensuring that each argument is fully developed to its potential. I also particularly enjoy discussing narrative theory with students. For example, my student and I might discuss the factors which influence the resolution of a story's plot. Did the book end that way for entertainment reasons? Is there a moral message? Would an alternate ending be too socially problematic for its intended audience to enjoy or endorse? Bringing my students to an understanding of an author's intent can be extremely rewarding.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

The teacher that inspired me most was my secondary school music teacher, Veronica. She showed me that kindness and understanding were priceless.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Empathy and a willingness to learn would be my pick for the most important qualities for a good tutor. Every student is different, so the tutor must be open to adapting their teaching method to accommodate each student
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was studying English at university, I became aware of the importance and elegance of simple writing. You can be as clever as anything, but if your writing is too complex or convoluted for the reader to follow, then what's all that wit worth? Not a jot. I learned this the hard way in university, as I was told that I should have "more sympathy for the reader" by writing in a more accessible manner. I try to impress this lesson on to my students as much as I can.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Language is a living thing -it constantly evolves. New words or expressions come along all the time. As a tutor working with students of various ages and levels, I must be able to ensure that I can communicate with my student in a manner which puts them at ease.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am a writer, mostly a poet. My writing tends to encompass my main interests, such as nature, mythology, and country living.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I can guarantee you'll leave my lessons educated and entertained.
