About Riya
With an MFA in Multi-Focus Violin Performance from California Institute of the Arts, and a BM in Film & Media Scoring from Berklee College of Music, I offer thoughtful, individualized instruction in violin, viola, composition, music production, and music theory, tailored to each student’s goals and learning style.
My deeper purpose as a music educator is to empower students to become independent thinkers who understand music as a performance practice, and also as a way of knowing and interpreting the world. My teaching philosophy is rooted in using research-driven tools and evidence-based strategies to support not only musical development, but also cognitive growth, and to foster the development of well-rounded, confident, and thoughtful individuals. I strive to create a learning environment where technical training and artistic exploration coexist, allowing students to build strong musicianship while also cultivating critical thinking, emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and holistic identity development.
My teaching is further shaped by extensive professional experience as a recording musician for film and television, including appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, collaborations with artists including Mariah the Scientist, Jacob Collier, and Alan Silvestri, as well as 20+ years of orchestral and music festival performance experience.

My lessons are structured to be tailored to each student's goals across the various subjects that I teach (violin, viola, composition, music production, and music theory).

My General Lesson format:
1. Check-In & Goal Setting
We begin each lesson by reviewing progress, celebrating wins, and setting focused goals for the session.
2. Warm-Up & Skill Building
Students start with targeted exercises designed to build technique, listening skills, creativity, or foundational understanding depending on their area of study.
3. Core Learning Focus
We dive into the main material; whether that’s repertoire, a composition project, theory concepts, or production work.
4. Guided Practice & Application
Students actively apply what they are learning with real-time feedback, ensuring concepts are understood and retained.
5. Musical Growth & Connection
We connect skills to the bigger picture of musicianship, encouraging expression, creativity, and deeper understanding.
6. Take-Home Plan
Each lesson ends with a clear, structured practice plan or project so students know exactly what to work on and how to improve between lessons.
