My Teaching Method and Techniques (AP Biology)
My AP Biology classes are designed to help students master both the content and the scientific thinking skills required by the College Board. Rather than memorizing facts, students learn to analyze data, interpret experiments, make predictions, and connect biological concepts across different units.
I use:
1. Inquiry-based learning and scientific investigations
2. AP-style multiple-choice and free-response practice
3. Data analysis from graphs, tables, and experimental results
4. Visual learning through diagrams, animations, and models
5. Concept mapping to connect topics across the curriculum
6. Regular retrieval practice and cumulative review
My focus is on helping students think like biologists while developing the exam skills needed to earn a 4 or 5 on the AP Biology exam.
A Typical AP Biology Lesson Plan
1. AP Warm-Up (5–10 minutes)
Review of previous concepts
AP-style multiple-choice question
Discussion of common misconceptions
2. Concept Development (20–25 minutes)
Explanation of key biological principles
Visual models and diagrams
Real-world biological applications
3. Data Analysis & Scientific Practices (15–20 minutes)
Interpreting graphs, tables, and experimental data
Designing experiments
Evaluating scientific claims and evidence
4. AP Exam Practice (15–20 minutes)
College Board-style MCQs
Short FRQ practice
Exam strategy and reasoning techniques
5. Review & Assignment (5 minutes)
Summary of learning objectives
Targeted homework and revision questions
