About Meredith
Hiya! My name is Meredith and I am currently a university student working towards a Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology degree. I have a huge passion for wildlife and the research/conservation efforts taken to understand and protect the species that call Earth home.
A fun fact about me, I have flown an airplane! And I am even studying for my Private Pilot's Certificate so that I can work as a Conservation Pilot! I love birds of prey and have had the opportunity to handle a Harris Hawk named Rangle. And, I have been raised on a farm for most of my life. Working with rabbits, dairy goats, dogs/cats, horses, poultry, and so much more! (Hence why I think I fell in love with Biology and science in general).
As I student, I understand the value of staying on topic and utilizing our time wisely to give you the most out of our sessions. In turn, I understand that biology can be goofy, strange, or just plain wild! I always try to ensure we do have a few minutes in case you want to share anything weird you discovered about biology or just get through all the brain jitter before focusing in on the tasks at hand. I believe a healthy ratio of each helps knowledge retention and enjoyment of the subject we are learning about!

Science is the essence of life! Just like the variety of species that biology makes up, every tutee learns with different methods and techniques. Depending on what the student both needs and enjoys, here are some of the methods/techniques I will utilize during our sessions:
1. Debriefing: This is where I try to ask questions and encourage our tutees to engage in sessions while allowing me to gauge what they already know and build from there.
2. Drills: Series of questions with a controlled response and only one right answer. A lot of biology comes down to memorization. Understanding vocabulary, cell structure, and other functions of life are important to know in order to build upon.
3. Alternation: The best way to understand in some cases is through explaining and teaching the lesson. So, I may take some time to allow my tutees to walk me through the information we have been learning. As if they are a make-shift tutor for the moment.
4. Application: The best way to ensure understanding is by applying the information they have learned. Real life situations and applications will be emphasized throughout our sessions.
- These are certainly only a few of the techniques I enjoy trying with my tutees! From here I can alternate any methods I need to in order to customize my plans for each student.
A typical lesson plan will include:
- (10-minute warmup) brings the students attention into our session with fun facts, goal updates, and a fun interactive to share about biology/what they are currently learning)
- (20-30 minutes) in the beginning to go over what we learned the prior week, address any new information provided by the teacher, and work through any additional questions.
- (30-40 minutes) of the additional time to cover new information, work through problems, and continue building off of the information learned prior.
- (20-minutes) or any extra time, will be spent working on new homework problems to ensure understanding, fun practice for future test questions, finalizing questions, and applying this new information to a real-life example or problem.
So why me and not another tutor?
I remember the first time I had to attend tutoring. I had never been confident with my math skills, and I was convinced I would never be able to get an A in a math class. My first meeting with my tutor made me realize that I not only could improve my math skills, but it made me excited to complete that goal. She pushed me to work hard, and I was so proud of that A! That is the feeling I strive to share with the students I work with.
I want to help develop goals that my tutees can work towards through our sessions. Giving them self-reflection time to see their progress and continue to set S.M.A.R.T. goals is an important part of the journey.
Most importantly though, I want to make our time fun! Yes, it's schoolwork, but I hope to add creative twists to aid learning and make the curriculum more exciting!
I am a visual and audible learner (big time!) in my own university courses. So, if that works best for my tutees, then that is how we will learn. If they prefer reading aloud to comprehend a definition, we will do that too.
I understand not every student learns the same way or the same pace as others. Hi, fellow student here! But I will do my best to help tutees find clarity in their courses and learn according to their own style.
My knowledge can help anyone in middle or high school understand their biology course!
