I first like to get an idea on the student's knowledge in the subject. There is nothing worse than teaching students material that they either find too difficult or easy. Instead of babbling on course material, I enjoy finding different ways of explaining concepts to make sure students fully understand the material.
In terms of teaching methods, they are usually focused first: on what the student wants out of the lesson (improving grades, understanding material etc) and second, on interactive ways to memorise or solve problems. This can be done by active recall and using examples of real life situations to make the lesson more engaging.
