About Pete Hunter
Hi, I’m Pete. Mandarin is my native language, and I have over four years of experience teaching Chinese to students of all ages—from as young as 5 years old to adults in their 40s. I hold a Level 1-B certificate in Putonghua (Mandarin Proficiency Test). My teaching style is patient, clear, and full of humor. I always strive to explain things in a way that’s easy to understand, no matter your level. As someone who has spent years learning English myself, I truly understand how challenging it can be to learn a new language—especially when the positive results take time to show. It’s easy to feel frustrated when progress seems slow. But please don’t give up. I’ve been there too, and I know that every language learner faces this same struggle. The good news is: you won’t be alone. I’ll be here to guide you through this tough—but also incredibly rewarding—journey. Currently, I live in Adelaide, Australia. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and reading—it helps me stay creative, curious, and connected to different cultures, which I love bringing into my lessons too.

My Mandarin lessons are tailored to each student’s learning goals, current level, and personal interests. Before we officially begin, I always take time to have an in-depth conversation with the student to understand their previous learning experience, motivation, and expectations. This helps me design a personalized curriculum that keeps learning engaging, reduces boredom, and encourages consistent progress through positive feedback.
As someone born in southern China and who spent eight years living in Beijing, I have a broad understanding of regional language variations and cultural customs across different parts of China. I speak several Chinese dialects—including Cantonese, Beijing dialect, Tianjin dialect, Wuhan dialect, and Sichuanese—which I sometimes introduce in class to help students develop a richer, more nuanced understanding of Chinese language and culture.
In general, each lesson lasts up to one hour. For younger students or beginners, I usually keep the lesson to around 40 minutes to maintain focus and ensure a comfortable learning pace.
