About Casey
Hello! My name is Casey and I just graduated from Bowdoin College as a neuroscience and education double major. I am headed to graduate school for neuroscience in the fall, and hope to work over the summer and throughout the year as a tutor. I have over 4 years of tutoring experience in a wide range of subjects, although my favorite is biology! While I now consider myself an individual who enjoys academics, this was not always the case. In middle school, I struggled with focus and organization. This made it especially difficult for me to write papers and solve word problems as my thoughts were always jumbled. However, I was lucky enough to receive tutoring that focused on executive functioning and allowed for me to work on these skills. This turned my academic career around, and made school a place where I felt comfortable taking risks. I mention this because I want to express that I understand how frustrating school can be, but I also know some pretty helpful tips that helped me excel! I want to be a tutor so that I can share the same support I received.
Some other facts about me, I am from Cambridge, MA and have grown up as a XC and track athlete. I ran throughout most of college and am currently training for my third half marathon. I also love to bike, specifically near my grandparents house in New Hampshire! I also love music; in school I led my a capella group, BOKA and had a weekly radio show!

Hello! My name is Casey and I am a 22-year-old Cambridge native who just graduated from Bowdoin college as a neuroscience-education double major with Latin honors and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. This summer, I am looking to offer my services as a STEM or English tutor. I have extensive experience tutoring in STEM, specifically biology and psychology. I have also had the opportunity to refine my computer science skills with programs such as Prism, Microsoft Office, Python and R. As for English tutoring, I worked as a reading support volunteer in Brunswick elementary schools and have over 3 years of English language tutoring experience in Brunswick high schools. Finally, while my focus is in STEM, I have experience helping build an “academic scaffolding” by focusing on organization, time management and executive functioning. As a student who received tutoring to help refine these skills, I know how impactful working on them can be.
At Bowdoin, I majored in education as well as neuroscience. This has allowed me to think carefully about my pedagogical practice and has exposed me to a number of resources geared towards enhancing student understanding. In the following paragraph I have outlined one possible lesson plan that represents what a session may look like. This plan explored mitosis - an integral biological process. This lesson may start with a brief video exploration of why cell division matters followed by brainstorming questions and observations about the process. We could then read a bit about cell division, before modeling chromosomes with household items such as socks. This will allow for a visual reenactment of the process of mitosis. After a single division is well understood, we could move on to thinking about how this occurs trillions or times! Finally we could think about some real life applications of mitosis by considering albinism or sickle cell anemia. The inheritances of these diseases are well understood and we could create some sort of project, such as a comic strip or drawing, to further enhance understanding. While lesson plans will vary based on student age and interest, my pedagogy is committed to a problem posing method of teaching that places the student in the role of investigator. This allows for more authentic and engaging inquiry into all subjects that is proven to increase understanding. This is true not only for STEM education, but also for English and reading comprehension.
I look forward to meeting you and learning together this summer! As a student who received tutoring throughout middle school, I know how impactful a good tutor can be and I hope to share the same support I received!
