About Paula
I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - a place so world-renowned that we call it just "Rio," as if it would fit right at the heart of any language and could be pronounced without restriction. In my land of many languages, cultures, beliefs, ethnicities, bodies, and genders, talking about equality, respect, and diversity is almost like blood running through my veins: it comes naturally. Being a Latina woman, from Rio, heir to black, indigenous, and colonial traits and customs, is what empowers me to write this report.
My first memory is of me with a makeshift blackboard of cardboard and chalk to teach (or at least play the image of a teacher) English. I liked to count to ten and knew the vocabulary of the children's universe, which I was eager to teach. My love for teaching has not changed, despite negative suggestions. Being a teacher in Brazil carries the stigma of being poor and includes those who have not succeeded in better paid professions. It is as if it was an escape plan and never a true and happy choice.
I wanted the freedom to be who I am - it foreshadowed what was to come. I taught children between the ages of five and ten. Suddenly I realized I came from a diverse womb. Without even knowing that the term "diversity" was in the dictionary, in practice it was what I observed it in their skin, mannerisms, how they speak, feel, and exist. We looked all the same even in our discrepancies.
I have taught students with disabilities, including hearing impairments, autistic spectrum disorders, and schizophrenia. Many were children of single mothers, homosexual couples, and with troubling family backgrounds (such as alcoholic or missing parents). Regardless of the context in which they existed or how they were labeled, they all lived happily, the genuine and most tender fusion of diversity, respect, equality, and inclusion. They did not know each other through the labels that society insists on prescribing.
A few years later, with my bachelor's and master's degrees, I chose to teach again. I became a teacher of Portuguese, English, and phonology for various levels: middle, high school and university. School/university is not often the most inviting environment for a teenager or young adult or an older person who has spent a lifetime of dissatisfaction. The cramped chairs, the rooms like cells, the walls in cold tones do not motivate any relationships or development. I lived with people who showed me how it is to exist in different spheres of life. I encouraged my students to be authors of their own plots and I received many commendations on my teaching and personal understanding of my students. Many sought me out because I was seen as approachable. From then on, they took me as confidants on their arduous journeys, and I am touched by the growth they inspired. They were transsexual, bisexual, depressed, obese, and autistic students who could not expose themselves in the past. In their testimonies, they highlighted their unhappiness and expressed the chance to simply be who they are. A person doesn’t need a diploma to love someone. It is necessary to invade their hearts. My job as a linguist teaches how to differentiate microscales and recognize their importance.
To be a Brazilian phonologist and to focus on a marginalized phenomenon is, equally, my way of revealing what only human language proposes: the equal waltz among the most diverse ways of locution and thinking about any language, multiple, but varied as those who fit in "Rio".
