About HERE AND NOW

Hi! I’m Claudia, a Brazilian language teacher with 37 years of experience helping learners use language to achieve goals that genuinely matter to them.

Over the years, I have worked with students learning Portuguese for very different reasons — travelling to Brazil, using Portuguese professionally, moving to the country, communicating with Brazilian family and friends, or simply developing a deeper connection with the language and culture.

My experience goes beyond the classroom. I have also worked as an education manager, teacher trainer and materials writer in language schools, bilingual schools and other educational settings.

My academic background includes three Bachelor’s degrees — Languages and Literature, with a full teaching qualification in Portuguese and English; Pedagogy; and Media Studies — as well as graduate studies in Language Teaching and an MBA in School Management. I also hold international language-teaching qualifications, including CELTA and Cambridge Train the Trainer.

But after 37 years in education, one principle remains at the heart of my teaching: the student should not have to adapt to a method — the method should adapt to the student.

That is why my lessons are built around your goals, your learning profile and the situations in which you actually want to use Portuguese.

My students often describe our lessons as personalized, organized, engaging and comfortable — a learning environment where they can communicate, experiment, make mistakes and gradually become more confident.

For me, teaching a language has always been about much more than vocabulary and grammar.

About the lesson

Your Portuguese course starts with one important question:
'What do you want Portuguese to help you do?'

Maybe you are preparing for a trip to Brazil, moving there, communicating with Brazilian family or friends, using Portuguese at work, or simply wanting to speak the language with greater confidence.

In our first lesson, I will learn about your previous experience with Portuguese, your goals and the situations in which you expect to use the language. I will also assess your current level and give you feedback so that we can define the best learning path for you.

From there, I design your lessons according to your needs, interests, level and learning profile.

Depending on your goals, we may work on:
• real-life speaking and listening
• pronunciation and natural Brazilian Portuguese
• vocabulary and grammar in context
• Portuguese for travel and everyday situations
• Portuguese for work and professional communication
• communication for people moving to Brazil
• Brazilian culture and the language behind real interactions
• reading and writing when relevant to your goals

Materials and activities are selected or created according to what will help you communicate more effectively.

I believe that learning happens best when lessons have a clear purpose but also provide a comfortable environment in which you feel free to try, ask questions, make mistakes and grow.

The goal is not simply to “study Portuguese”. It is to help you use Portuguese in your life.

When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
I consider myself lucky because I have always wanted to be a teacher. I remember teaching my dolls as a child and I actually started working as an ESL teacher when I was 16 years old. I loved studying English and Portuguese and it was an incredibly rare opportunity to become a tutor at such an early age. The owner of the school taught me everything she knew about the language acquisition process and language teaching. Since then I have never stopped developing myself. I will always be deeply thankful for what she has done for me. It was also back then that I decided to use my profession to make a difference in people's lives by helping them reach their goals.
What makes you passionate about your subject?
This question gives margin to a lot of different answers from several perspectives, but I prefer to stick with the one I consider to be the most valuable: languages build bridges. And this is what makes me passionate about Portuguese and English. In my 33-year experience, I have lost count of the people I have helped connect and grow, and this is extremely rewarding.
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Teaching is part of who I am - as simple as that. I have been a teacher for 33 years now, and throughout those years I have gathered a lot of experience and never stopped studying. That is why I am confident I can raise your needs, and learn about both your profile as a learner and your objectives, as well as your current level in the language, in order to design the course that truly boosts your development. It is not about you adjusting to a methodology, but about the methodology being suitable for you. Additionally, I strongly believe that a teacher is a partner. I want to help you reach your goals and this is what drives me to do my job.
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
Too many to name! I have had a lot of incredibly competent and inspiring teachers along the journey and studied the research of innumerous well-known educators. They all have one thing in common, though. Truly committed professionals, they all reinforce the beauty of embracing education as a career to bring a positive contribution to people's lives. In other words, quoting the admirable educator Prof. Paulo Freire, "What the educator does in teaching is to make it possible for students to become themselves."

Honestly, the true measure of success for me is actually my students' success.
