I have always known that teaching children to love learning is the path laid out for me, and the way I wish to make a mark on the world. It is through teaching the next generation that we are truly able to make a difference—a difference in a life, and a difference in society as a whole. As a creative, I want to find beauty in the world to showcase it, and as an empath, I want to find a way to help others understand and search out the intricacies of life; finding love for this seeking—this learning—of who we are. One of our greatest skills as humans is our ability to solve problems, and as a Christian thinker, I am reminded of the words of Jesus in Matthew 17:20, “if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you” (ESV). As a teacher, I can help children find this power to “move mountains”, this force within that guides them to seek what is greater, to learn and create solutions to the problems they face. I believe that teaching requires conveying both skills to function in daily life and inspiration to grow in enthusiasm for learning. I hope to emphasize these skills by bringing creative and inquisitive thinking into the classroom, noting the importance of individual and societal values, and building trusting, communicative relationships with students, parents, and staff.
I plan to focus on teaching creativity in the classroom, with curiosity as the drive that powers learning. I want my students to be interested in what they are learning because they want to find out more, and hope to achieve this goal through incorporating literature and exploration of nature into my teaching, while allowing students the freedom to be creative. Reading was a large part of my childhood and I since realize that it helped me develop skills that have proved invaluable in my adult life, namely imagination and an understanding of others through stories of lives I have never lived, as well as vocabulary of uncommon words I would not have learned otherwise. I hope to incorporate reading as a way to help students find the appreciation I had when I was their age. Every student will learn to love reading if they have the right material presented to them, so it will be my goal to fill my classroom with books and build connections with my students so I know what stories to introduce to them. I also want to bring students back into nature. In this age of technology, it seems that children are being pulled further away from the real world and caught up in internet addictions. Technology has its place in the classroom, but I want to bring students outside and show them that there is beauty and excitement to be found outdoors. As an overarching standard, I believe that when students are given autonomy over their learning, they are more inclined to find what they are passionate about, which is why I plan to develop relationships with my students that allow me to understand what they are interested in and individualize their learning toward such outcomes.
I want to give students the opportunity both to make learning their own, while also appreciating what it is to be a good person. Where I went to school in British Columbia, there is a strong emphasis on BC’s First Peoples’ Principles of Learning. These statements reflect the importance of well-being, holistic approach, and exploration of identity. Students need to be able to find out who they are, what they want from learning, and what they truly value. It is clear that a strong sense of morality is integral to every aspect of life, and I hope to incorporate the virtues of integrity, responsibility, and empathy. An acknowledgment of their values is what drives students to take hold of their learning, and own the work they create in the classroom. I plan to assess students primarily on their growth; using formative and summative assessments to showcase how they have advanced their learning based on how they began at the start of the year. There are certain curricular standards which are necessary to meet, but when students fall on either side of the average for their grade level, it is important to provide them with opportunities to find success and push them to realize how much more they are capable of learning. The disparity in an individual’s learning is why I also plan to place an emphasis on goal-setting and reflective journaling, so students have an opportunity to advocate for themselves and their own learning.
The school environment is a place where people come together under one goal, the learning of each individual child, and I recognize the importance of not only the teachers and staff, but parents and guardians who are the experts on their child’s needs and skills. Communication and collaboration are skills I value greatly, and I welcome all knowledge that leads to the ultimate success of the student. For these reasons, I plan to be in regular correspondence with parents of what we are doing in the classroom, how their child is progressing, and what steps can be taken at home to promote further learning. I hope to work with colleagues who are also of this mindset, and appreciate conversation surrounding teaching techniques that can be beneficial in the classroom. I have had a good deal of experience co-teaching classes with other teachers, and I find this an excellent way to think creatively and build on one another’s individual skills. Although I am a teacher by profession, I am continually learning from my students, their parents, and the people I work with.
Creativity, authenticity, and communication are important factors in my career, and I am grateful to have this amazing opportunity to create in students a desire for learning and a sense of belonging. As teachers, we change lives, and we equip the next generation with the tools they need to combat the realities of adulthood. I hope that the passion I bring to this career will enlighten, guide, and inspire every student I meet.
