About Geoffrey

I have been coaching for 30 years following 10 years as a professional actor and have a great passion for stage craft and expertise in confidence, presence and vocal range.

I have worked with some amazing actors and directors including Sam Mendes and the late Charlton Heston.

I have taught hundreds of students in the theatre, in business and the corporate world through 121 coaching sessions, group coaching, theatre workshops and online programs.

I work with beginners, experienced and well established actors, some of them quite famous as well as corporate leaders and speakers all of whom just want to get and be better and better.

I help with stage fright and nerves, feelings of inadequacy and not being good enough. I like working with those who feel ‘stuck’ personally or with their performance or speech as well as those who have a fear of failure.

I like working with those who struggle with a lack of confidence and help them to acquire the presence and authenticity they seek, an approach that works well for students who have drama school entrance auditions.

Back in the 80's I auditioned for 6 drama schools and was accepted by two and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

There I received some private coaching by the legendary Rudi Shelly who taught stage craft at the school. Sessions with him taught me how to sight read because I struggled so much and felt very insecure about it.

Through those sessions I learnt a very simple methodology around phrasing and sense and believe that all students can benefit from understanding how language works and love to pass this on.

I am the founder of ‘Fear to Flow’ and ‘Video Confidence Mastery’ both online programmes that help students improve their confidence on stage and on camera.

From time to time I run ‘Presence-The workshop’ at the Courtyard Theatre in London for a day of exploration and discovery.

My students tend to come away with a new sense of authenticity and ease of being in performance and more able to access, what I call, their natural self-expression.

My professional performances include West End shows, National and Arts Council Tours, rep seasons, some film and TV. I have directed two plays.

I like to work with students who don't take themselves too seriously or who would like to not take themselves too seriously, who are curious and sometimes feel like something is missing but are totally committed to being the master of their craft.

I'm extremely supportive, passionate and compassionate and work in an atmosphere that feels easy, safe and non judgemental.

Many actors tend to ‘push’ their voices when their character is in a heightened state of emotion and can resort to shouting, which can totally alienate an audience, even subconsciously and often does.

Actors tend to shout when they lack an authentic connection to why their character feels so strongly and tend to play a 'blanket' emotion or 'mood' where they 'show' rather than 'be' as a consequence of their thoughts and feelings producing emotion. They also tend to lack an appreciation or awareness of their vocal range.

Imagine a recorder being played for 2 hours on three notes and every now and then a note gets blasted out?

Part of my work is about coaching actors to access there natural vocal range and to see their voice as an instrument upon which they can comfortably rely to convey their characters thoughts and feelings.

A foundation of my approach is to encourage and support students in the art of listening and the importance of 'speaking to the listening' a natural something that is vital for any authentic dialogue to become real.

To truly and deeply listen instead of acting at listening.

I take the view that before we utter a word we are always already listening and it is this listening I have found after many years of study and investigation, that provides and colours the subtext of our communication.

I find that when an actor can truly let go and listen they become vital and spontaneous and very exciting to watch on stage, screen and in auditions.

Through this, students learn to restore or reaffirm what I see as their innate ability to be present.

I help willing students to learn to school these attributes in everyday life, making the transition to being on stage or in front of the camera an extension of their authentic selves.

In order to be in command of their presence and to speak with intelligence I sometimes take actors through simple stage craft drills and exercises, if needs be always with an eye anther vocal range.

I also help to improve their sight-reading capabilities which is helpful when exploring their character, improving their knowledge of phrasing, the use of language and how to identify certain words that help spontaneity and clarity.

This helps them to speak sense through exploring subtext, instead of gabbling or talking mood and to improve their ability to lift words from a page and make them real.
