About Briella
I am a passionate chess tutor and strategist who views the game as a beautiful mix of art, science, and sport. I love the intellectual challenge of chess and I am eager to share that enthusiasm with my students. My teaching style is logical and patient, designed to help you organise your thinking and avoid "hope chess." I have a background in competitive play, which gives me practical insight into the emotions and calculations involved in a real game.
I specialise in helping beginners and intermediate players eliminate blunders and develop a solid repertoire. I have guided many students to increase their ratings significantly and enjoy the game on a deeper level. We will work together to analyse your weaknesses and turn them into learning moments. I am here to be your sparring partner and mentor, helping you navigate the infinite complexities of the 64 squares.
My ultimate aim is to equip you with the skills to enjoy chess for a lifetime, whether you are playing online or in a club. I find great satisfaction in seeing a student execute a tactic we practised or formulate a winning long-term plan. My method for teaching Chess focuses on developing a structured thought process, moving you from reactive play to proactive strategy. I emphasise the three phases of the game—opening, middlegame, and endgame—ensuring you have a cohesive plan from the very first move. Instead of memorising endless opening lines, I teach the underlying principles of piece activity, centre control, and king safety. My lessons are interactive, often involving the analysis of your own games to identify recurring mistakes and missed opportunities.
We will vigorously practise tactical pattern recognition, solving puzzles that sharpen your ability to spot forks, pins, and skewers in real-time. I place a strong emphasis on calculation and visualisation, training your mind to look several moves ahead without moving the pieces. Through the study of classic games by grandmasters, we will absorb the strategic concepts that have stood the test of time. I customise the complexity of our sessions to match your rating, pushing you just enough to stimulate growth without causing frustration.
I am committed to supporting students in developing the psychological resilience required for competitive play, teaching you how to handle time pressure and recover from blunders. We will discuss tournament preparation and the etiquette of the game. By fostering a critical and analytical environment, I encourage you to question every move, including your own. My goal is to transform you into a formidable opponent who understands the "why" behind every decision on the board.
