About George
I have long had a passion for maths and physics which led me all the way to doing cutting edge research at CERN and completing a PhD in particle physics. Looking back on my own education I have thought that these subjects are often not taught well. Too many students leave maths and physics lessons knowing how to follow a method without ever being told why it works, what it's for, or where it fits into the bigger picture. Taught this way, both subjects can feel like a list of rules to memorise rather than genuinely interesting ways of understanding the world — and that's where curiosity gets lost. My aim as a tutor is to explain ideas properly, not just procedures, so that a topic starts to make sense rather than simply becoming something to get through. A student who understands why something works remembers it for longer, applies it more confidently in unfamiliar problems, and just as importantly starts to find the subject genuinely interesting rather than something to endure.

I start every new student with a short diagnostic conversation (and a look at recent test papers or homework, if available) to find out exactly where the gaps are — is it a specific topic, exam technique, or general confidence with the subject? From there, lessons are built around that student, not a fixed script.
My Methodology:
Working through problems together rather than watching me demonstrate — I want to see your thinking, not just give you mine.
Breaking difficult topics into smaller steps and checking understanding before moving on, rather than assuming a concept has landed.
Regular past-paper and exam-style practice as the exam gets closer, with a focus on the mistakes that cost the most marks.
Short recap tasks between sessions so lessons build on each other instead of starting from scratch each time.
Clear, jargon-free explanations, with plenty of room for questions.
Lessons will typically be an hour but can be longer if needed.
I have a PhD in particle physics so have great insight into university and academia and am happy to discuss students' future education and career prospects. I have experience running 2 weekly small group tutorial sessions at first year undergraduate level as well as doing private one-on-one sessions. I tutor GCSE and A-level students in maths, physics or related subjects who are either struggling or want to push for the top grades. Happy to do online sessions or in person around Greater Manchester.
