About Emily
Teaching ESL requires a holistic, adaptive approach that addresses the varied backgrounds and learning styles of students. I focus on creating personalized lesson plans that balance accuracy with fluency, ensuring that students not only understand the rules of English grammar but also gain the confidence to use language spontaneously in conversation. I integrate authentic materials—such as news articles, interviews, and videos from English-speaking cultures—to provide real-world context and deepen cultural understanding. Vocabulary and grammar instruction are embedded within communicative tasks, allowing learners to see the relevance and function of language elements. Pronunciation practice is incorporated through focused drills and interactive speaking activities to enhance clarity and build self-assurance. Technology is a valuable tool in my classes, with apps and platforms used to supplement learning and encourage self-study. My teaching philosophy embraces patience, encouragement, and ongoing feedback, recognizing that language learning is a journey with individual challenges. One particularly gratifying experience was helping a student transition from basic survival English to presenting confidently in a professional setting. My overarching goal is to support students in becoming independent, effective communicators who feel at ease engaging with English speakers worldwide.

In my view, ESL teaching should be a journey where students gain not only proficiency in language skills but also confidence in using those skills in real-world situations.
My approach centers on a communicative, student-driven philosophy where each lesson is designed to meet the unique needs and interests of my learners. I tailor my lessons to create an immersive, practical experience that mirrors the challenges and opportunities students will face in their daily lives.
Whether working with beginners just starting to learn English or advanced learners focusing on professional or academic language, I aim to equip my students with the tools they need to communicate fluently and confidently. The core of my teaching lies in the communicative approach. I prioritize speaking, listening, and interaction, which allows students to practice language in realistic contexts. Lessons often include activities like role-playing real-life scenarios, such as making reservations, networking, or presenting ideas in a business setting.
Grammar, while essential, is taught in context rather than isolation. I focus on helping students understand how to use grammar as a tool for clear communication. I explain complex grammar points like verb tense usage, conditional sentences, or subject-verb agreement in simple terms, and give students plenty of practice applying them in conversation or writing tasks.
Another key aspect of my teaching is integrating cultural context into the language lessons. I believe that understanding cultural nuances is just as important as mastering grammar or vocabulary. Therefore, I bring in elements of the English-speaking world’s diverse cultures, including regional accents, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references, to enrich the students’ understanding of the language.
One of the most fulfilling moments in my teaching career was helping a student who was preparing for the TOEFL exam. Through personalized feedback and practice with the speaking and writing sections, they achieved a high score and felt confident in their ability to use English in academic settings.
I also leverage technology to make lessons interactive and engaging. By using online resources, apps, and video materials, students can continue to practice and improve their skills outside of class. My goal as an ESL teacher is not just to help students learn English, but to enable them to use English effectively in any context, from casual conversations to professional presentations.
