About Oliver
GCSE: Chemistry, Biology, Physics A-level: Chemistry I am a newly qualified teacher with a BSc and PGCE in chemistry from the University of York. During my training I consistently received praise for my strengths in resource creation, use of questioning to assess and build understanding on as well as my ability to provide one-to-one support to students during my lessons. Having been both taught under and trained in the current national curriculum, I am familiar with both the core content and exam technique for both GCSE and A-level. This means I can focus on the most important aspects of each topic and how to tackle exam questions effectively. I have a strong passion for the sciences and education passed down to me by incredible teachers who have inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. At Sixth form I was the president of the chemistry society, giving talks on topics I had researched myself, as well as helping other students with their own presentations.

One of the most important factors in exam results is the motivation for the student to work hard, which can only be achieved if the work is interesting and enjoyable as well as productive. Relating core scientific principles to everyday applications as well as examples specific to the interests of my students helps make my sessions engaging. Having been taught under and trained in the same national curriculum, 2013 to current day, I have become intimately familiar with the core content and exam technique for both GCSE and A-level. This means that I can adopt a results-driven approach to my lessons, focusing on the most important aspects of each topic and how to tackle exam questions effectively alongside fostering that interest and engagement with the topic. It also means that I have a strong bank of resources, some of which I’ve made myself, for my students to work through with my help. The main focus of my teaching methodology is understanding what the student already knows and, more importantly, the way they understand it, enabling me to modify and adjust my explanations accordingly. As such the first, will focus on the student's current understanding and ultimate goal to create a series of short-term, achievable targets and guide my focus in planning for future lessons. All lessons will also have a strong component of student-teacher dialogue which will help me adapt my teaching style. Lessons can be conducted online, using Zoom and an online interactive whiteboard but preferably in person using the power of pen and paper.
