About Cengiz

I was a Court Interpreter in London. I am fluent in English as my mother is English despite being brought up in Cyprus. I have also taught English at a University. I have set up a Chess Club and have been teaching chess for about 7 years. I mainly teach one-to-one and can teach up to 2000 Elo.

Find out more about Cengiz

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started playing chess in London when I was 9 years old. I learned it at Primary School but developed myself at a Club in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I have been influenced by Gary Kasparov and Bobby Fischer whom are 2 of chess' greats!
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

In order to be a good coach, you need to be patient, attentive to your students' needs, be disciplined, humble, good at psychology (in order to motivate (to study chess) and console your students (after setbacks) as well as being knowledgeable and friendly.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

I tell them to keep their goal in mind and this helps them in the tough times. Developing at chess is not usually plain sailing. There are ups and downs so the student should not lose sight of their goal.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

I love chess and cannot think of a life without it. I can spend many hours a day involved in chess without getting bored. I like playing and teaching it and I see myself as a chess ambassador as I believe that chess helps students develop in areas such as decision making, planning and overcoming obstacles.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am proud of my results against International Masters and Grandmasters. I have managed to draw against England's 7th best player at the time and beat Turkey's 6th best player in 2012. As a coach, seeing the effect I have had on my students fills me with pride. I take a lot of pleasure in seeing my students making lots of progress. In particular, I can say that helping an 11 year old unrated player achieve a 1700+ elo performance at an Internationally rated tournament in Novi Sad, Serbia is currently my finest coaching achievement.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I have been very surprised by a 6 year old Russian boy's progress in Kyrenia (Girne) in Northern Cyprus. I believe that he is Grandmaster material as his chess instincts are phenomenal!
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I am grateful to Superprof for the students it finds me. I try to be as disciplined, helpful, conscientious as possible and always give 100% to improve my students' level.
