My approach is to make sure that students understand the basics and the key principles of the opening phase of the game. Once students begin playing, I refer back to these principles and help them to understand why moves are effective or ineffective. I like to review some of the greatest games ever played, to help students hone their understanding and improve.

Perfect! Very friendly, patient and insightful.
Perfect! Only my second session with Daniel but I find him to be a pleasure to work with. It is very clear he had an extensive background in education. He is tutoring me in chess but I believe he also handles more general academic subjects as well. Daniel is polite, patient, and very well spoken, and will definitely be worth what you pay him. No hesitation at all for me to reccomend Daniel!

Mr. Herman is a kind and loving teacher who makes learning fun! It was a pleasure to have him for two years in high school, where his techniques invited creativity and fostered intellectual growth.
Daniel taught both of our sons how to play chess. He is a fabulous teacher! Daniel came to our home every week for the lessons. He was always prompt and we trusted him very much. Daniel is very skilled, knowledgeable and experienced! He is also very enthusiastic and loves to teach his students! We are very grateful for all that Daniel has taught to our sons and would highly recommend him to anyone in our community! 5 stars!!
Mr.Herman is the best; he has such an unique ability to weave in fun into superb education! I was never bored learning from Mr.Herman, and I learned a lot!
My son took a chess class with Dan and he loved it. Dan was able to keep the class fun and my son learned so much. Dan was very patient with the kids in the class and he kept their interest very well. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that is thinking about taking a class with Dan.
I would HIGHLY recommend Daniel! I signed my daughter up for chess classes with Daniel in the spring during virtual instruction. She was brand new to the game and very reluctant. However, after just the very first round, Daniel made her feel comfortable and she became hooked immediately. He has a wonderful handle on virtual learning, was able to give plenty of one to one assistance, and even stayed in close contact with parents. My daughter looked forward to chess days each week! This was possibly the brightest, happiest part of all virtual learning. I was so grateful that Daniel was there!
Mr. Herman was a great teacher. He was very considerate of his students and thoughtful about his lesson plans. I always felt super engaged in Mr. Herman’s class and always had a good laugh. I would highly recommend taking a class with him if you can.
Many years ago when I had Mr. Herman as a teacher, I'd fallen behind in the reading of an assigned novel, Billy Budd. He took several hours of his time at the end of a school day to help me understand the novel, and how to read it the way Melville intended it to be read. Needless to say from that day forward I was at the top of the class with the book and he changed the way I read books, and became a friend post graduation. It's been over 20 years and we are still in contact
Dan is a very talented English teacher. He knows perfectly how to connect with teenagers and how to transmit to them his knowledge and his passion for learning. He managed all the activities and lessons incredibly well, facing challenges and overcoming them easily. He is very easygoing and it is really easy to work with him.
One of my fondest childhood memories is learning chess from Dan! From his after school sessions, to his Saturday tournaments, to his summer camps, chess was always a fun activity that brought new groups of people together, many of whom became my closest friends. Anything he organized was always really well run and I really couldn't imagine my childhood without chess, or Dan! I am truly indebted to Dan for introducing and teaching chess to me all those years. Through playing chess, I gained an excellent intuition for strategizing and thinking ahead which continues to benefit me even after my years at Dan's sessions.
Mr. Herman will always have a fond place in my heart. I was on the Chess team in high school, where he was my coach for three years. During some trying years of my adolescence, he was a teacher, coach, mentor, and when needed a friend.
As my coach, he significantly improved my chess skills from novice to a competitive player. More importantly, he instilled in me a love for the game. A love that has carried through to this day. Through chess, Mr. Herman taught me to work hard, face adversity without getting frustrated, and learn from my failures. Those lessons have paid many dividends in the years since.Mr. Herman taught me freshman year. It was after a move to a new town and I had trouble acclimating. He had a warm, light-hearted approach that made learning easy and enjoyable. Although English was my least favorite subject going in, he provided many creative ways to teach the subject. This included the preposition rap; a catchy rap song that helped us learn all of the prepositions. Speaking of rap, he let me present a rap song I knew for a poetry project! He has a knack for thinking outside the box and engaging students to learn. Mr. Herman is a great asset to any teaching staff and will make English an enjoyable subject for any student.
