About Bianka
I speak Bulgarian fluently (as it's my native language!) and I have achieved a B1 level in French. After graduating from Oxford this summer, I'll be heading to the Courtauld Institute in September to complete an MA in History of Art.
Throughout my degree, I have engaged actively with student life both in my college and university. I served a year as my college's Arts Rep, organising events such as Jazz Evenings in the Picture Gallery (our college's very own art gallery!) and Oil Painting lessons with a local artist. Further, I worked on the editorial team for The Isis Magazine (Europe's oldest student magazine) for a total of two years, during which I held a position in the Senior Editoral Team for two terms. I was also a Krasis Scholar at the Ashmolean Museum, which saw me partake in weekly symposia on visual and material culture, making use of the museum's vast collection and fascinating archives, often engaging with object studies, object-handling, and giving regular presentations on various topics.
In my studies, I have a particular interest in Aesthetics, Ancient Philosophy, Mysticism, Hinduism, and theological thought throughout the long 19th Century. In my penultimate term at University, I wrote my dissertation in Aesthetics alongside two extended essays on Mysticism. Since beginning my degree, I've grown especially interested in philosophical and theological questions related to History of Art, as well as in History of Art as a subject in its own right!
I enjoy doing pilates or yoga and playing squash to relax after a day in the library (with punting, rounders, swimming and badminton in the summer!), as well as reading the latest novel I picked up in Blackwells, watching a film on MUBI or in the Curzon, and catching up with friends. I'm also an avid traveller with family and friends all over Europe, meaning that I rarely spend more than a week in one place during the summer!

Having been both a tutor and a tutee in the past, I understand that acknowledging individual differences in learning styles is key and I absolutely believe that it is through resilience and creativity that a tutor's teaching style should be tailored to suit each student. I believe that tutoring is a collaborative effort, meaning that I cultivate active participation and stimulating conversation as a means to encourage an enjoyable way of learning. My favourite thing about tutoring is sharing my own interests with individuals who I then get to see grow their interest in the subject themselves, which is always really rewarding to see!
I plan my lessons entirely according to what the respective student wishes to cover. Before tutoring lessons even begin, I ensure that I understand the student's needs and subject-specific concerns during the initial free meeting, as well as the concerns and needs of the parents.
In order to make quick and steady progress, I employ a collaborative approach to tutoring, which enables me to work with the student in the most pragmatic and enriching manner. Perhaps most importantly, I make sure that the student is as comfortable as possible with the learning process- making mistakes is not a negative thing! Instead, I encourage students to see mistakes as immensely valuable learning opportunities, as they often help both me as the tutor and the student themselves to understand what we need to work more on, and where the root of their lack of confidence may lie.
Ultimately, a successful lesson is one in which we get through work productively whilst learning from mistakes and taking the time to celebrate progress as well as any increases in confidence. I actively encourage attention to nuance and detail, critical thinking, and consistent engagement within all my students, which I find is also great preparation for revision and exam technique sessions as it develops a confident and perceptive thinking style.
