About James
I'm a 27 year old civil engineer. I love maths, and I love teaching! In my work, I get to use a lot of maths but unfortunately don't get to teach much anymore. Fresh out of university I taught for 3 years in a Bristol primary school, then flew off around the world to teach in China and other South-East Asian countries. Since then, I've been missing the fulfilment of helping young people learn and achieve. My aim is to provide kids with the tools to feel positive about their maths, to be able to walk into an exam hall or classroom and have confidence in their own maths skills.

At the moment, a lot of the maths curriculum in schools is built on mastery, which can mean a lot of repetition and memorising methods. This works great for some kids, but others can be left behind without a real understanding of the subject matter. In my sessions, I put an emphasis on achieving true understanding and building confidence - making maths less scary.
As I work with a range of ages and levels, my sessions will be tailored to fit your child's needs. We will set clear goals and targets to reach - whether that's working towards an exam, catching up with the school syllabus, understanding a particularly difficult subject, or even advancing beyond the syllabus.
My lessons are for children of all proficiencies, ages 9-16. These can be face-to-face or online, and are 1 hour long. For students aged 12+ longer sessions are available.
Note: I am double vaccinated and take regular lateral flow tests for work
