About Derek
I’m a junior studying Applied Mathematics at Columbia University, and I tutor students in math, IB subjects, SAT preparation, and academic problem-solving. I completed the IB Diploma with 44 out of 45 points, including 7s in Higher Level Math Analysis & Approaches, History, and Economics, and I scored 1550 on the SAT.
I want to help students who feel stuck or overwhelmed turn confusing material into something more structured and manageable. My background is both quantitative and humanities-based, so I’m comfortable helping with technical problem solving as well as clear reasoning, writing, and exam strategy.
I aim to be responsive, organized, and practical. My goal is not only to help students understand the topic in front of them, but also to help them build better habits, confidence, and a clearer path toward stronger grades.

My lessons are structured, practical, and focused on improving both understanding and grades. I usually begin by identifying exactly where a student is struggling, whether that is a concept, a problem-solving method, exam technique, or confidence. Then we work through clear explanations, guided examples, and targeted practice.
For math, I emphasize step-by-step reasoning, pattern recognition, and learning how to approach unfamiliar problems. For IB or exam preparation, I also focus on markschemes, common question types, and efficient study strategy.
My lessons are best for middle school, high school, IB, SAT, and early college students who want a patient but systematic tutor. I try to make difficult material feel less intimidating while still keeping lessons focused and goal-oriented.
