I value an individualized and student guided approach rather than one size fits all, incorporating mindfulness and lighthearted but serious play/fun. I value breaking down the hierarchy between teacher and student, so we can both learn together, because ultimately teaching is learning too.
For violin posture, for example, all bodies are different and "good" posture will emerge from right awareness and playful self-discovery, my approach for which is largely informed by a somatic discipline called the Feldenkrais Method. I've dealt with a lot of pain from one size fits all teachers--the fact is that all bodies are different, and a posture that works for me might not work for you.
A similar approach will be taken with repertoire, choosing which music to learn--on one hand, it should be enjoyable, of interest to the player, but it should also challenge and provide opportunity for growth and discovery, which may include boring technique drills as well! I love variety in most things, so I gladly welcome trying/learning multiple things at a time, trying new things, etc. I believe variety is core to neuroplasticity, our brain and body's natural ability to learn and grow--and if we don't use it, we lose it!
Lessons open for all levels.
