About Geoffrey
Hello! My name is Geoffrey. I am a film music student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (currently on sabbatical). I would love to share some of what I've learnt with other students and engage with others in a rewarding and encouraging way. In a typical one hour lesson, we could look at 2 separate subjects depending on what you would like to focus on: theory or orchestration. In an orchestration lesson, I would run through the standard practices of orchestration for each instrument group in an orchestra and then some examples of that being applied. This could include looking at composers such as Ravel and Poulenc. We could then look at applying these techniques to get from piano sketches to full orchestral mock-ups. A theory lesson would take a similar structure. Starting from counterpoint and harmonic analysis, we would build up confidence in good core orchestral writing. Please note that I am mainly focused on orchestral composition in the classical and romantic music eras (approximately 1750 to 1900).
