About Tamsyn
Hello, and welcome! I'm Tamsyn Johannisen, a Cape Town-based fashion designer with over ten years of experience across design, product development and garment manufacturing. I hold a BTech in Fashion Design from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and my career has taken me from a Woolworths internship, through designing ladieswear and kidswear for TCI Apparel, to managing a team of 19 pattern makers, machinists, graders and marker makers as Sample Room Manager at Truworths. That means I can teach you not only how to design a garment, but how it is actually developed, costed, specified and made.
My teaching follows the full journey of a garment: trend research and concept, design and CAD, pattern making, construction, quality and fit, and finally the tech pack. Lessons are practical and project-based, so you leave with real skills and pieces for your portfolio. I can also teach CorelDraw, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator for fashion. A typical lesson starts with a quick review of your progress, moves into hands-on work on your current project, and ends with honest, constructive feedback and a small task to practise before we meet again. I teach in English. My lessons suit beginners, fashion students who want extra support, and aspiring designers building a portfolio. I'm happy to adapt to your level and goals, and I look forward to working with you!

I teach fashion design through a hands-on, project-based approach, based on 10 years of experience in fashion design and clothing manufacturing. What sets my lessons apart is that I treat every student as a designer from day one: we work on real pieces and build a portfolio, rather than just going through theory. A typical lesson begins with a short review of your progress and goals, then moves into a focused practical session and ends with personalised feedback and a small task to practise before we meet again. My lessons suit all skill and interest levels from beginners to those preparing for fashion school applications or career changers and I adapt the pace and content to your level, whether you're starting from scratch or refining a specific skill.
