About Rose
Hello, I'm Rose, and thank you for visiting my profile.
I am a UK-qualified secondary English teacher with a First Class BA (Hons) in English with Publishing from the University of Plymouth and a PGCE in Secondary English with QTS, awarded with Distinction, from Plymouth Marjon University. I currently teach English across Key Stages 3 and 4, and I lead an exam-focused intervention programme for Year 10, so I know exactly what students are asked to do in lessons and exams, and where marks are gained or lost.
Before teaching, I worked in publishing and the arts. At Slate Publishing House, I supported the editorial process through copy-editing, proofreading and manuscript preparation, and managed marketing copy across press, web and social media. I have also worked for the Dartington Trust and served as a trustee of two charitable organisations, including the Charles Causley Trust, which promotes literature in the community. I have always loved helping people, and communication is at the heart of everything I do.
I support school students, university students, adults building their literacy skills and learners of English as an additional language. My lessons are friendly, structured and tailored to you, and my aim is for every student to leave each session feeling clearer, calmer and more confident about their English.

About me:
I'm a UK PGCE-qualified secondary English teacher (BA Hons English with Publishing, University of Plymouth; PGCE from Marjon University, 2025) and I'm currently teaching in a secondary school. Because I'm in the classroom now, I know what students are being asked to do in lessons and exams, and where marks are most often lost. Before teaching, I worked as an editor at Slate Publishing House and for a university's Ink Journal, where I copy-edited, proofread and prepared manuscripts. I also have extensive copywriting experience, so I can help you make your writing clear, accurate and persuasive, whatever your level.
Who my lessons are for:
School students, Years 7 to 11 (ages 11 to 16): from KS3 confidence-building through to GCSE English Language and English Literature (AQA). Reluctant writers, students aiming for top grades and everyone in between are welcome.
University students: help planning, structuring, writing and editing essays, including clearer argument, stronger analysis, referencing and proofreading. I'll guide you to improve your own work, not write it for you.
Adults and learners building literacy skills: friendly, pressure-free support with reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners: support with written English, vocabulary, grammar and confidence, for study, work or everyday life [confirm the level you're comfortable teaching, e.g. intermediate and above].
Writing support: creative writing, personal statements, CVs and applications.
How I teach:
Every student starts with a short conversation and a look at their recent work, so we can set clear goals and focus on what will make the biggest difference. My lessons are friendly, structured and adapted to each learner:
Exam technique: breaking down questions, using mark schemes and timing answers
Writing skills: planning, paragraphing, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar
Essay and editing support: building arguments, tightening structure and proofreading, using professional editing techniques
Literature: close reading of set texts [add texts you know best], building confident analysis using clear structures
Literacy and EAL support: clear explanations, plenty of practice and steady, manageable steps
Live feedback: we work through writing together, so you can see how to improve as you go
Progress tracking: short written feedback and targets after sessions [confirm you want to offer this]
My aim is for every learner to feel capable and calm about English, not just drilled in technique.
