About Alexander
Toronto-born cellist Alexander Smith began lessons at the age of 3. Since then, he has performed extensively across the United States and Canada, and has been featured on The Violin Channel, National Public Radio, and Interlochen Public Radio. Alexander is currently pursuing a Master of Music at The New England Conservatory, where he is a recipient of the Beneficent Society scholarship, studying under Blaise Déjardin and Yeesun Kim. Previously, he received a Chancellor’s Scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University, studying with Dr. Felix Wang while enrolled in a dual-degree program in Environmental Science. Alexander also holds a diploma with academic honours from the Interlochen Arts Academy.
Alexander has studied under renowned musicians such as Anssi Kartunnen, Edgar Meyer, Hans Jørgen Jensen, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Johannes Moser, Lluís Claret, Marc Coppey, Paul Watkins, and Zlatomir Fung, among others. In 2019, he was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Artist Award and was featured on NPR’s From The Top. In 2021, he was the sole recipient of the Jean Keller Heard Prize for Excellence in String Performance.
He is the cellist of Trio Alinea, formed at the New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Ara Gregorian and Vivian Hornik Weilerstein. From 2019 to 2023, Alexander served as the cellist of the Eunoia String Quartet. They were invited as an ensemble in residence at Southern Illinois University, and were both prizewinners and laureates of the MTNA, Coltman and Plowman Chamber Competitions. Alexander has a strong passion for contemporary music, having performed notable works such as George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae under conductor Hugh Wolff, collaborating closely with Pascal Le Boeuf, and premiering works adapted to silent film by Maria Newman. He has given the premiere performance of three solo works for cello to date. He is also an active participant in the historical performance practise, studying baroque cello with Guy Fishman.
He performs on a poplar Ruggieri-model cello crafted in 2021 by Andrew Carruthers in Santa Rosa, and a purpleheart bow made in 2018 by Bernard Walke in Ottawa.
