About Laura
I teach English Literature at Durham University, where I received an unconditional pass for my Ph.D in 2018. I have five years' experience teaching undergraduates, and have held Visiting Fellowships at Harvard University and the University of Texas, Austin. I have particular strengths in poetry, the novel, and classical reception.
I am also a Shared Reading Leader, and have experience running literature outreach projects with Early Years, KS1, KS2, and KS3 pupils. I have delivered sessions to GCSE students as part of The Sutton Trust Summer School, and I am able to teach widely across the A-Level English curriculum.

My main aim is to teach students how to think critically about texts and then articulate their ideas clearly and effectively. I take an inclusive, friendly approach, and encourage students to be bold and creative in their thinking. This is a subject that rewards nimble and adventurous thinking, so I try to make the most of it! Tutoring works best when it is a collaborative effort, so I try to lean into student's strengths and interests - as long as core skills and outcomes are being developed and met, I believe it is in everyone's best interests to be flexible about material.
I also offer academic writing and research skills workshops specifically tailored for pupils preparing to attend university. The requirements of A-Level and undergraduate essays are vastly different; my workshops provide students with tool-kits and strategies that help bridge that gap. Having the fundamentals in place means that you can dedicate more energy to creative analysis, which - after all - is the most enjoyable part of the study of English Literature!
