About Kew

I’m a Master’s student from Dendermonde, currently living in Ghent. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology. I strongly believe in the idea of learning by doing. This philosophy shapes many areas of my life—running marathons, playing football, skateboarding, boxing, and even learning musical instruments. All of this reflects my eagerness to learn. It’s also how I approach Dutch: always from a practical perspective. What happens in practice often differs from what’s in theory. And in the end, it’s usually those real-life applications—like writing tasks, grammar exercises, and text analysis—that are tested on exams. More info? Check @kew_academy (Insta)

In my environment, I notice that fellow students often prepare for Dutch exams using traditional methods. Usually, this just means memorizing the course material chronologically. Back “in the old days,” that was the only option. But honestly, it’s a very slow method.

The world has changed and gone digital. Everything is online. And yes, past exam questions too. I ALWAYS start with past exam questions—either provided by the teacher or found online.
It surprises me that some students want to study the entire syllabus first. In practice, this often leads to time pressure, and they end up with no time left to review past exam questions.

Why start with (past) exam questions?
-Your goal is to pass the exam, not just increase your knowledge for its own sake.
-High chance old questions will reappear.
-You learn the style of questioning.
-You get straight to the essence of the subject...

For Dutch, you really don’t need to memorize the entire syllabus. Sure, there are theoretical questions, but most points are always awarded for text analysis, grammar, and writing tasks that test understanding. And those tasks are ALWAYS similar to past exam questions. So doesn’t it make sense to focus on them?

After working through past exams, PowerPoints and class notes become secondary. Again, by then you already know where the emphasis lies.

I always try to study actively and out loud, constantly asking myself questions. In Dutch, it’s crucial to be able to move from rules (grammar, spelling, style) to concrete examples. After a while, you’ll start inventing your own examples. This makes everything much more tangible.

One final skill I want to stress is creativity. Creative approaches to writing and interpretation almost always earn you more points.

I have many more tips to share, but I’ll save those for later… :)
