About Andrew
I am a UBC Masters in Economics Graduate with experience tutoring students in business, math, writing, and economics. Aside from developing my skills through teaching, I have a real passion for understanding how people think and learn. I have written about 70 essays, and I have experience with both business writing and persuasive writing. Which component of writing I teach will affect my pedagogy. I strongly believe in teaching writing through learning-by-doing. In general, I will:
- Prepare a lesson plan based on what you want to learn
- Motivate the concepts, which may range from rhetoric, to grammar, or writing strategies
- Build understanding through a pattern of practice and feedback
My pedagogical approach depends crucially on practice and feedback. I will expect you to complete writing exercises. I will then evaluate your writing, provide feedback, and discuss the feedback with you in tutoring sessions. I will then adapt lessons to target what you would find most beneficial based on these exercises, and what your goal is.
The most important component of this is not your ability to learn, nor your writing skill. Rather, because my approach depends on practice and feedback, the most important thing is that you come to these sessions willing to learn. On my end, I will adapt lessons to meet your unique circumstances, to support you in learning at your own pace, and to help meet your goals.
