About Nicola
I like to connect with students by exploring deeper ideas, demonstrating my professionalism as well as having patience and a sense of humour. I am an excellent listener and value open and honest dialogue, so I will pay close attention to your needs and values. Let’s read and talk about a range of interesting topics, covering global issues and debates. As well as teaching English, I have a background in drama, art and sociology, so passionately enjoy integrating these topics with a cross-curricular approach. In my personal life, I love cooking (and food, in general), music, swimming and listening to podcasts.

I am a compassionate English tutor who offers individualised learning to students. I use positive-psychology and assets-based approaches, meaning I always begin with what young people’s strengths are, rather than focusing on perceived weaknesses, and help them harness these to build academic and personal confidence. I successfully build strong and authentic relationships with students, centred around my passion for English and my ability to attune to pupil needs and characteristics. I have tutored for over 10 years and worked as an English Teacher for 7+ years in diverse school environments (training through the reputable Teach First Leadership programme), particularly supporting EAL and SEND students to thrive and challenge themselves. I have taught English Language and Literature across the curriculum, including A Level, for different exam boards (AQA, Pearson, Cambridge IGCSE, Oxford A Level)- this includes being an AQA accredited examiner. I am a specialist in ‘critical literacy’ and curriculum development. This is about socio-emotional learning, ‘big ideas’, debate-skills, as well as about investing in student wellbeing, future prospects and helping them to better understand themselves and their place in the world. I am passionate about creative and collaborative approaches, notably around discussion and vocabulary instruction, which has informed my research and school development work to date. This includes delivering department and whole-school training on a range of areas including: critical literacy, assessment, and creative writing, as well as working with Voice 21 to develop our oracy provision. I have partnered with Warwick University to deliver opportunities for aspirational Key Stage 3 students to develop their academic confidence. I am currently reading “Developing Curriculum for Deep Thinking” by Surma et al and “The Little Book of Ikigai- live a happy and long life the Japanese way” by Ken Mogi.
