About Christine
I was born in the United States and lived there for most of my life. I grew up in Louisiana but also lived in Washington, DC, and Pittsburgh, PA. During my third year of college, I did an exchange program in Tokyo, Japan, for a year. For 15 years, I worked as a software engineer. I moved to Brazil in 2012 to be with my husband. I completed a 120-hour TEFL certification from the University of Toronto in November of 2020. I have practiced Aikido, a Japanese martial art, for more than 25 years. I enjoy cooking and spending time with friends and family. I also enjoy reading history, neuroscience, and science fiction books.

I have 10+ years of experience teaching EFL. I have a variety of materials to suit any level, from beginners to advanced students. I am a native English speaker from the United States and a fluent Brazilian Portuguese speaker. In my experience, many students were never taught the basic sounds of English. For this reason, I often include phonics exercises in my classes. When teaching grammar, I focus on the meaning of a particular construction rather than just how to make it. It is important for students to do exercises that require them to choose between more than one possible grammatical construction. This replicates real life, where one must choose the construction that will communicate the correct meaning. Learning grammar is important, but it is not enough to make students fluent speakers. Once they learn basic grammar, I incorporate speaking exercises so that they can apply what they have learned.
