About Josh
I am originally from New York and taught high school here in Colorado for fourteen years. My Bachelor's degree is in English and I have a dual certification Master's in education covering k-12 ESOL and secondary Language Arts. I have had the responsibility of building curriculum and the pleasure of adapting material to diverse student populations. I love argumentative and analytical writing as well as making these skills meaningful for students. I have a background in incorporating pop culture and games into my lessons and have presented at Denver Comic Con and Denver Fan Expo on topics such as using comics, graphic novels, Star Wars and anime in the secondary classroom and incorporating tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons in the secondary lit classroom.

My teaching methods combine a relationship based approach and content driven learning. The text, argument, or topic serve as the entry into skills based learning whether in analysis, writing, editing, or revision.
Typically beginning with a reading or exploration of a topic, for instance a student experience that will turn into a personal essay or an excerpt from a novel to be analyzed. This is important for early middle school learners all the way up through high school and even early college. Students will not just complete assignments but learn the skills necessary to carry their understanding forward to be more self sufficient on future tasks.
I am compassionate and have worked with all levels of learners from students improving their basic English skills through top AP Lit and AP Lang students. There is no doubt I can help you improve your writing, analysis, and speaking skills no matter what your starting point is! I can even help you get into college and get scholarships.
