About Claire
I am a published writer and poet who returned to university as a mature student to pursue a Master’s degree. Returning to academia, I saw many people who had not been taught the fundamental skills needed to engage with academic work through their schooling. As a neurodivergent adult myself, I particularly noticed many situations where people whose learning styles did not fit the narrow mould schools often expected were dismissed and no effort made to engage with their needs or to show them how to use their talents. Having graduated, I want to teach people in a flexible way that centres their needs and their learning styles and guide them to unlock both the incredible richness of English literature and the deeply necessary skills to engage with textual analysis and communicate clearly and effectively.

Teaching from a lifetime of love of language, while working to your or your child’s specific goals, such as passing an exam or strengthening an area of difficulty, I also work alongside a learner to develop the broad base of knowledge and ability within both the English language and textual analysis skills that allow you to succeed across a broad swathe of academic disciplines. With a background in literary theory and analysis of texts reaching from Norse sagas to the autobiographies of enslaved people, from Dante to Ursula Le Guin, I work to bring a strong understanding of how language has been used across time and space; the reasons why people have written across the centuries, and how a learner can analyse and understand these texts and use the same techniques to understand every kind of modern text they might encounter, from advertising copy to news to novels. I teach how to plan and write effective essays; how to organise and edit your work to produce clear, concise and effective analysis, and how to construct an argument that is persuasive as well as accurate.
