About Veronica
My name is Veronica and I am an experienced English teacher (KS3-5) and an examiner for AQA. I believe in the potential of all students, even if they feel that the subject is challenging or “not for them”. I have particular experience mentoring KS3 and KS5 students and also have 3 years of experience working 1-1 with students with SEND and EAL needs. I strongly believe in working with the students and their interests to develop core skills. My main loves are developing criticality and argument skills. I also specialise in teaching approaches to unseen texts – for GCSE, A Levels, and entrance exams like the ELAT. I have supported many cohorts with their UCAS applications, all getting full offers and even successful applications to universities such as Oxford to read History, Imperial College to study Medicine and Edinburgh to read English and Classics. For creative writing I have experience with mentoring all writing forms. My mentees have placed first in writing competitions and have also been awarded placements at competitive residencies with other writers such as Emily Berry, Sam Byers and Diana Evans. I have a flexible and interdisciplinary teaching style. I prioritise the individual learning needs of the students and their ability to develop their own ideas and voice. Not focusing immediately on rote practice or formulaic memorisation but instead teaching and practising key skills that will last students a lifetime. Naturally, this can be short term or long term depending on the time frame of the student. As an experienced teacher, I aim to help students to balance an understanding of requirements of the exam boards as well as how to navigate their personal development. I strongly believe in nurturing confidence through making the subject relatable and purposeful – the study of English is as interesting as we make it to be! I have experience with teaching English Literature and English Language. If you are more interested in developing your creative writing skills, I have led creative writing sessions and have guided mentees to win competitions and gain places at competitive creative writing residencies. I love guiding mentees to trying new writing styles, playing with language and developing their personal style.
