About Joyce

Hello! I'm an English educator with a Bachelor's degree in English, a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in English, and over 700 hours of supervised classroom teaching across elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. In addition to my classroom experience, I worked as a university Writing Center tutor, helping students strengthen their writing, critical thinking, and communication skills through individualized support.

I believe every student is capable of growth when given the right support and encouragement. My goal is not simply to help students earn better grades, but to equip them with the confidence and skills to become independent learners. I create a patient, welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and challenging themselves.

Whether you need help with literary analysis, essay writing, grammar, reading comprehension, or academic writing, I tailor every lesson to your individual goals and learning style. I look forward to helping you build confidence, strengthen your skills, and achieve your academic goals.

I believe the best learning happens when students understand the why behind what they are learning, not just how to find the right answer. My goal is to help students become independent, confident thinkers by breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps while gradually encouraging them to apply those skills on their own. Whether we're analyzing literature, improving academic writing, or preparing for essays and exams, I tailor each lesson to the student's learning style, strengths, and goals.

My lessons are highly interactive and structured. A typical session begins with a student-led check-in, followed by a brief review of previous material and any remaining questions. We then introduce new concepts through guided examples, think-aloud modeling, and collaborative practice before transitioning to independent application with immediate feedback. These approaches reflect the instructional practices I developed through extensive classroom teaching and lesson design.

What sets me apart is my combination of classroom teaching experience, one-on-one writing instruction, and research in English education. Through over 700 hours of supervised teaching across elementary, middle, and high school classrooms, I have worked with diverse learners and learned how to adapt lessons for different abilities and learning needs. My background in English, digital humanities, and accessibility research also allows me to incorporate thoughtful reading and communication strategies into every lesson.

I offer lessons for middle school, high school, and college students seeking support in English language arts, literary analysis, essay writing, reading comprehension, grammar, academic writing, and study skills. I also work with students preparing for AP English, standardized assessments such as the ACT or SAT, or those simply looking to build greater confidence in reading and writing. Every lesson is personalized to the student's academic level and learning objectives so they leave each session with stronger skills and greater confidence.
