About Sylvia
I've been working with youth for about 9 years now, and am deeply passionate about helping make education more accessible to students of all backgrounds, learning capabilities, and learning styles. It can be difficult to feel like just a number in the larger classroom setting, which is why tutoring, either 1:1 or in small groups, can be incredibly helpful. I've taught 100% immersive Spanish to 3rd and 5th graders who were beginners and immersive English to Moroccan teen and tween girls between the ages of 6-17 who were beginner/intermediate English speakers. I have also taught jazz flute lessons to groups of 15-20 elementary school students. Additionally, I have many years of camp counseling experience, including at camps where I taught math and coordinated STEM projects for younger girls. I also taught bike lessons and have babysat regularly since I was 11 years old. More recently, I've been helping tutor students at my college with Biology 100. I enjoy teaching and helping others. I aim to help you accomplish your goals and gain the confidence to complete assignments and study for exams on your own.

Hi! I'm currently studying History, Hispanic Studies, and education at Oberlin College. Through courses like Language Pedagogy 301 and teaching exposure, I have learned effective tools to help children and adults alike acquire languages based on their learning style and what has been proven to be most effective. Some learners prefer a kinesthetic approach, where touch and movement are heavily involved in their learning. Others are more visual learners, where graphs, pictures, and diagrams are most helpful. Lastly, many learners prefer auditory input. I like to gather a sense of what helps my pupils learn best. When it comes to language learning, whether it's English, Spanish, or something else entirely, auditory input (speaking and listening practice) are often the most effective ways to acquire a language.
In my Spanish and English classrooms, I take account of student learning styles to create engaging, immersive, and fun lessons where students are practicing the L2 (Target Language/Second Language) as much as possible, avoiding the L1 (First Language). Through practice with "functional chunks," which are small, accessible phrases that novices can easily speak on their own, I encourage my students to challenge themselves.
Most lessons begin with conversation practice. First, I will model the conversation with the student. Next, I'll encourage them to jump in, through engaging hand movements associated with the functional chunks. This immersive approach has proven effective.
Later on, I'll create reading and writing practice sheets based on the student's goals and abilities. I'll encourage students to challenge themselves, while not pushing them too far outside their comfort zone.
I also have experience tutoring Biology. I've helped students practice with flash cards, encouraged them to discuss the concepts with me out loud, done mock presentations, put the concepts in a silly context so they seem less intimidating, and used helpful visuals and drawing practice for diagrams. I've tutored college students only in Biology, but could certainly teach younger students as well.
My lessons can be for any age group, but most of my teaching and mentoring experience has been with ages 6-14. I'm entirely flexible, and happy to teach younger or older kids depending on your preference.
