About Ashley
I am an experienced History tutor and postgraduate historian with over 16 years’ teaching and tutoring experience, specialising in GCSE, iGCSE and A-Level History.
My background includes:
Postgraduate study in History to PhD level
MA in Cultural History
University teaching experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant
Experience teaching undergraduate seminars and marking university work
Former Senior Examiner for the British Council
Cambridge ESOL-accredited teacher
Experience teaching students from primary level through to university and adult education
During my postgraduate research at the University of Manchester, I specialised in twentieth-century British cultural history. My PhD research examined self-help culture and changing ideas about the individual in postwar Britain, drawing on the history of psychology, technology, work, gender and religion. I also presented my research at the Rethinking Modern British Studies conference, where my paper received very positive academic feedback.
What I particularly enjoy about teaching History is helping students move beyond simply knowing what happened to understanding why it happened, how historians construct arguments about it, and how to develop convincing interpretations of their own.
My teaching is highly individualised. I begin by identifying a student's existing knowledge, strengths and specific difficulties, and then build lessons around the areas that will make the greatest difference.
I combine clear explanation and modelling with questioning, guided practice and regular retrieval of previous learning. Complex skills are broken into manageable stages before students are gradually expected to apply them independently. This means that we are not simply preparing answers to questions they have seen before: students develop the skills to tackle unfamiliar questions and sources confidently for themselves.
My manner is patient, warm and encouraging, while remaining academically ambitious. I regularly work with students who have lost confidence in History or become frustrated because they understand the material but cannot translate that understanding into marks. I particularly enjoy the moment when a student realises that essay writing and source analysis are learnable processes rather than mysterious abilities that some people simply possess.
I am happy to mark work between lessons and, for school-age students, provide parents with clear feedback on progress.

study and research skills
One of my main specialisms is teaching students how to write genuinely analytical History essays.
Students often know a good amount about a topic but lose marks because their answers become descriptive or narrative. I explicitly teach the process behind a strong historical argument: interpreting the exact question, developing a thesis, selecting and sequencing arguments, choosing precise supporting evidence, explaining significance, considering counterarguments and reaching a substantiated judgement.
Rather than simply telling a student that they need to “be more analytical”, I show them what analysis actually looks like. We compare responses, construct paragraphs together and examine how changing a sentence can move an answer from description to explanation, evaluation and judgement. Support is gradually removed until the student can reproduce the process independently.
The same principle applies to source questions. Students learn to move beyond surface-level comments about provenance or “bias” and instead analyse a source's message, purpose, context and evidential value. The precise approach is adapted to the requirements of their examination board.
GCSE & A-Level exam preparation
Exam preparation is always based around the student's specific specification and assessment objectives, rather than generic History advice.
We identify where marks are being lost and target those areas directly. Depending on the student, that might mean strengthening factual knowledge, improving source inference, developing more sophisticated explanations, making comparisons explicit, integrating evidence more effectively or producing sharper overall judgements.
Past papers are particularly valuable because they allow us to practise the entire process:
decode the question → retrieve relevant knowledge → formulate an argument → plan → write → evaluate against the assessment criteria → improve
This helps students understand not only what a strong answer looks like, but how to produce one under exam conditions.
University-level History
I also support undergraduate and Master's students with the academic skills involved in essays, presentations and dissertations.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Manchester, I taught undergraduate students and gained experience of marking academic work, providing feedback, teaching research and study skills, and helping students develop historical arguments.
At this level I can help with:
developing and refining research questions
essay and dissertation structure
constructing and sustaining an argument
using primary and secondary sources
historiography
research methods
planning and organisation
academic style and clarity
presentations
My role is to develop the student's own thinking and academic skills rather than write work for them.
History for interest
History does not have to lead to an examination.
I am also very happy to teach adults or younger students who want to explore history, the humanities or social sciences purely out of curiosity.
These programmes can be designed around a particular period, country, historical problem or theme. Rather than recreating a school course, we can build a personalised programme involving reading, discussion, primary sources, documentaries, historical debates and independent research.
As someone who continually undertakes learning projects of my own, this is an aspect of tutoring I particularly enjoy.
