About Freyja
I have a diverse fitness background. I've been a martial artist since I was 8, teaching 5 styles of martial arts: Muay Boran, Kenjutsu, Battojutsu, Bujutsu, and Taijiquan. I've been a strength and figure athlete since I was a teen when I got into bodybuilding, and later, powerlifting. I'm a combat veteran and former law enforcement special operations, where I honed my focus on functional and tactical fitness. As an exercise physiologist and researcher, I've focused my interests on transgender fitness, and the interaction of hormones with exercise.

I'm a gentle, even handed teacher who believes in positive reinforcement and repetition of foundational skills and knowledge. I prefer the contemplative educational model, where my focus is less on teaching you to regurgitate information and then forget it, and more on cultivating and nurturing a deeper understanding of the curriculum. Why does this happen this way? Where did this idea come from? What's the philosophy behind this system? What can we extrapolate from these research sources?
A typical lesson plan with me would include:
-A explanation of the concept or topic of the lesson.
-Exploration of the underlying principles of that topic.
-The origins, evidence, and foundation of the topic.
-Culminating in a single, random question about the topic, called a "Warrior Exam", where your answer must convey to me your understanding of the topic, not only the information provided.
I am equipped with the skills and information to instruct beginning through advanced practitioners in yoga and martial arts, all levels of fitness, nutrition and exercise, and up to bachelor's level in anatomy and physiology.
