About Christabel
I am a receptive and inspiring tutor, with three years of experience teaching undergraduates at numerous Oxford University colleges. I have recently re-located to London from Oxford while I complete my PhD in Music and Anthropology, which is generously supported by an Ertegun Graduate Scholarship in the Humanities at Wadham College, Oxford University. I am available to tutor students in a range of subjects, including Music, Anthropology, Sociology, Media Studies, History and Piano.
Prior to my PhD, I obtained an MA in Popular Music and Culture from Oxford Brookes University funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and a BMus in Music from King’s College London where I was awarded the Purcell Prize for achieving the highest mark in the undergraduate degree. I also hold Grade 8 piano (Distinction), and was fortunate to receive piano tuition at the Royal Academy of Music for three years as part of my Music degree at King’s.
My teaching experience at Oxford involved teaching weekly 2-hour tutorials to groups of 3-5 students. I designed and prepared teaching materials, set and marked weekly essays, helped students prepare for exams, and marked exam papers. I have also worked for Oxford Undergraduate Admissions in Music, which included reading personal statements, interviewing candidates as part of an interview panel, and deciding outcomes. Additionally, I have experience as a free-lance piano teacher.
I have published articles in The Journal of Sonic Studies and Contemporary Music Review, and contributed chapters to three edited books. I have also presented papers at academic conferences in South Africa, Northern Ireland and Hungary, as well as England. These experiences have provided me with a wide range of skills and tools that I am able to pass on to students as part of my tutorial teaching, including confidence-building, oral presentation, writing technique, editing, performance skills and dealing with performance anxiety.
