About Mary Jane
I have an undergraduate degree in Education and two master’s degrees, one in educational psychology and the other in public health. I also have certificates in TOEFL/TOESL from Oxford. I have been tutoring for the past ten years both online and in-person. Additionally, I assist high school and university students with essay and thesis writing and editing. I also have experience in writing business proposals and curricular. I am a very warm and supportive person who easily establishes good rapport with her students, a critical requirement, I believe, to achieve optimal learning results.

I especially enjoy tutoring because it allows me to tailor the methodology and content to match the learners’ needs. Mine is a flexible approach that builds on the learners’ strengths and works towards remediating weaknesses. I find that teaching in context works best for my learners. For example, I find that students learn best by doing. For example, I might ask a student to write a blog about his pet by using only the active voice and the simple past tense. We then read the blog together; I correct the first few errors with an explanation. As we go on, I ask the student to find the mistakes for themselves and to correct the rest of the blog. Amazingly, students learn quickly to pick out their errors and make the necessary corrections. For the next assignment, I ask the students to write a blog using colourful adjectives and adverbs. Once again, I initially go through the process of identifying errors and then challenge them to self-edit with corrections. I believe that by developing strong writing and editing skills, students acquire a solid understanding of language and grammar. They also develop a feeling of satisfaction from self-editing that also reinforces learning.
My teaching style is structured in as much as I set objectives for every lesson but I used flexibility to reach those objectives ensuring that my lessons are resonating with the students and keeping them engaged. I believe that the best learning takes place when the students are fully invested in the process.
