About Ian
I am an experienced civil litigation paralegal with bachelor and master's degrees in history and law respectively from Birkbeck College University of London. I have experience of high-value claims running in the Chancery and Queen's Bench Division of the High Court, the Civil Division of the Court of Appeal and disability & religious discrimination claims running in the County Court, Employment Tribunal, Employment Appeal Tribunal and the SEND Tribunal. I love teaching tort law, contract law, criminal law, trusts & equity law, EU law, land law and public law to degree level students. I have an informal style (Starbucks is my office). I also have a number of disabilities including dyspraxia and Irlen Syndrome. Accordingly, I'm empathetic to those with disabilities. I am happy to help students doing LLB's, GDL's and LLM QLD's.

I am very informal when it comes to teaching. I prefer face-to-face teaching and like to use visual aids (ranging from my 10-year-old MacBook to my rather battered bowler hat). Generally, sessions would not be more than 2 hours long and I try to aim for a Starbucks(!) as they are often well lit (and I like the coffee...!). I often ask for students to send me module and seminar guides in advance so that I can read them. This way I can understand what a student is being taught and how.

It is a pleasure to write a reference for Mr. Ian Roberts. Mr. Roberts was recently an LLM student at the School of Law, Birkbeck College, during which time I was his dissertation supervisor. Mr. Roberts was active, involved, proactive with his studies, and was also trustworthy, understanding and empathetic. I think he would make an excellent Tutor, and I would be happy to provide any further details you might need upon request.
I know Ian Roberts because when I was running a crowd-sourcing project to draft a new UK constitution (2014-15) I relied on him to engage with us from his perspective as a strong supporter of the monarchy - he is I think still vice chairman of the British Monarchist League. He did this very well, throwing himself into the debate and arguing with both passion and good humour. Of course I thought he was somewhat over-engaged in this single issue but still that is what I asked him to do. I have never taught him or engaged with him in a focused academic environment. Of his wider interests and involvements I know little, but his CV does speak to a man with a good range and a strong interest in community-based work. I like Ian, and we have met from time to time since. I think he could make a decent fist of being a tutor and barrister - he has resilience and also a feel for students, clients and instructing solicitors I would say. The class of honours he tells me he got in his two degrees suggest he would be able to cope. The Bar and the teaching profession both surely still have room for the more mature entrant, and here is one who is not only in that category but who has the potential to make an unusual (not using that term disparagingly) contribution to both professions. On this basis I do warmly support him.
