About Gary
Hello, I'm Gary, and I have dedicated almost 30 years to teaching and inspiring students in Computer Science.
Throughout my career I have taught in a wide variety of schools and colleges, working with students of different ages, abilities and aspirations. I currently teach GCSE and A Level Computer Science full-time while also undertaking a part-time PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Kent. Alongside my teaching, I enjoy public outreach, giving astronomy talks and sharing my enthusiasm for science and technology with audiences of all ages.
I believe that the best teachers never stop learning. Continuing my own studies allows me to bring the same curiosity, enthusiasm and academic rigour to my lessons that I encourage in my students.
My teaching style is patient, supportive and encouraging. I understand that every student learns differently, and I take pride in explaining complex ideas in a way that makes sense to the individual. Whether a student is struggling with programming, preparing for important examinations or aiming for the highest grades, I work hard to build both understanding and confidence.
Outside teaching, my interests include astronomy, physics, programming and distance running. These interests often find their way into my lessons through real-world examples that help bring Computer Science to life.

Every student learns differently, so I tailor my lessons to the individual rather than following a rigid programme. Whether you are aiming to improve your confidence, achieve a top grade at GCSE or A Level, prepare for university, or simply strengthen your understanding of Computer Science, lessons are designed around your goals and current level of knowledge.
I teach Computer Science at GCSE, IGCSE and A Level and have nearly 30 years of teaching experience in schools and colleges. I currently teach the AQA specification but have extensive experience with Cambridge International and OxfordAQA courses, allowing me to support students studying a range of examination boards. Alongside my teaching, I am undertaking a part-time PhD in Astrophysics, ensuring that I remain academically active and continue to develop my own knowledge and skills.
Lessons are one hour in length and are delivered online. During each session I combine explanation, worked examples, discussion and exam-style questions to ensure that students not only understand the concepts but can also apply them successfully in assessments. Where appropriate, we will write and test code together, work through algorithms step by step, and develop effective examination techniques. Students are encouraged to ask questions throughout, as I believe curiosity is one of the most powerful tools for learning.
My aim is not simply to help students pass examinations, but to help them become confident, independent thinkers who genuinely understand Computer Science. Many students arrive believing the subject is difficult; they leave discovering that, with the right guidance and approach, it is both logical and enjoyable.
I welcome students of all abilities, from those who need additional support through to those aiming for the highest grades or preparing for university study. Whether you need regular weekly tuition or focused revision before examinations, I will provide structured, supportive and engaging lessons designed to help you achieve your full potential.
